Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will use the “full capability of Nintendo Switch 2”

Nintendo Switch 2 missed out on the recent launch of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, but Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka says that the game will use the “full capability” of the system.

Technically, you can play the title on Nintendo’s latest console through backwards compatibility with the Switch 1 release. However, there should be benefits with the proper Nintendo Switch 2 version.

In an interview with Traxion, Iizuka stated the following:

“We wanted to release the Switch 2 version at the same time [as other platforms]. But because the console’s release date was later, we wanted to make sure we could provide a game that optimized the new console.

When you look at the content that will be provided, there’s no difference between the Switch 1 and Switch 2 games. It won’t be a 100% replica because of the differences in the hardware specs.”

Iizuka didn’t clarify what we can expect from the frame rate and resolution on Nintendo Switch 2. However, a boost in performance would be very much appreciated. On Nintendo Switch, the game runs at only 30 frames per second.

Iizuka did note that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has the “same experience with the same content” on both Nintendo consoles. “I think our users can look forward to the game on Switch 2,” he said.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be on Nintendo Switch 2 at some point this year with a physical version lined up for early 2026 – with the full game on the cartridge. In the meantime, fans can pick up the game on the previous Nintendo Switch. We have a review of that version here.
