Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – Steve & Alex Minecraft DLC launches on October 13, lots of details
During a presentation today, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai revealed the release date for the game’s new Minecraft DLC featuring Steve and Alex. Players can get their hands on the new character, which also includes the Minecraft World stage, on October 13.
Sakurai shared a ton of details about how the DLC character works in today’s presentation. We have the full roundup of tidbits below.
– Eats a steak for one of his taunts
– Doesn’t jump very high; midair jump slightly higher
– Low jump is just right for getting on blocks
– Steve has two color variations
– Alex also has two color variations
– Zombie and Enderman skins
– Uses sword for neutral attacks, smash attacks, air attacks
– If you hold the attack button down, you can walk while repeatedly swinging the sword
– Can also do this while retreating and jumping
– Sweep attack that only exists in the Java Edition of Minecraft
– Axe assigned to attack overhead
– Can hold the button down to keep swinging the axe
– Pickaxe used for mining and dash attacks, forward air attacks, back air attacks
– Forward attack has a meteor effect
– If you jump while swinging the sword, you end up with a sword attack
– Can use Craft to strengthen each tool
– Equipment powers up in the following order: wood, stone, iron, gold, diamond
– Weapons/tools have limited durability
– Attack with weak barehand if your equipment breaks
– All tools operate independently
– Down tilt attack uses flint and steel, sets a fire in front of you
– Up smash attack is the magma block; placed overhead and can be mined quickly
– Down smash is the lava bucket, dumps fire left and right
– Anvil for down air attack; falls straight down but can cancel partway through
– Use fishing rob for grab
– Neutral special works differently if you’re on the ground, at a crafting table, or in the air
– They are Mine, Craft, and Create Block
– Mine: dig the area in front of you to collect materials
– Can mine walls
– Tactics depend on the terrain/level you’re on
– If you mine more materials that you can carry, they’ll be discarded
– Craft: make tools with materials you have
– Press B near the crafting table to craft
– Crafting table shows up at the start of the battle
– Highest-quality tool will be crafted from materials you have
– Diamond sword most powerful
– Golden tools are fragile and have lower power, but speed up your attacks
– Set order to the materials you get when digging in certain areas
– If you keep digging, you eventually get diamonds
– Your attacks and opponents’ attacks can break the crafting table
– Crafting table does come back quickly
– Press the special-move button while shielding to summon the crafting table no matter how far away it is
– Can’t summon it while dodging
– Create Block: press B in the air to Create Block
– This uses your cheapest or simplest materials first
– If you hold the button down and jump/walk, you’ll continue making blocks
– Block will break soon after you climb on it
– Attacks and those of your opponents can break it
– There’s a restriction in placing blocks off screen
– Blocks near the edge of the screen break quickly
– Material gauge shows the materials you’ve collected by ratio
– Need four pieces of iron to craft an iron tool
– Side special is Minecraft
– Need iron to bring out the minecart, and other materials are needed
– If you have gold/restone, you can place powered rails
– Strong special when used head on
– Can jump out of the minecart and scoop up and opponent with it
– Elytra is the up special
– Functions like a glinder, so will stall if you aim too high
– Can’t hover at all when it ends
– No materials needed to use elytra; can use it as many times as you want
– Down special: TNT
– Can make it using lower-quality materials like dirt and stone
– Explosion is really powerful
– Explodes more easily if struck by an attack
– Won’t explode immediately when you put it down
– Redstone consumed if detonating remotely with pressure plate
– Opponents can also step on pressure plate
– Ignites easily with firearms or fire-based attacks
– Can set off with minecart
– Final Smash: House of Boom
– Only one opponent gets trapped in House of Boom, but can hit other opponents
– Special shield formed with perfect shield
– New stage: Minecraft World
– Biomes: Plains, Birch Forest, Taiga, Snowy Tundra, Stone Shore
– Battlefield and Omega forms included for the stage
– Couldn’t bring in music from the original game due to it not being suited for fighting
– Tracks from spin-offs and mini games taken, including tracks from Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons with arranged versions
