Video: Testing temperature readings with Switch games and overheating the system
Spawn Wave conducted some tests with Switch to see what the system’s temperature is like while playing multiple games. The results are fairly interesting.
Perhaps as you would expect, Switch runs at a higher temperature when playing docked in comparison to using the battery during portable play. With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the temperature reading went from roughly 41 degrees Celsius to about 49.
Zelda: Breath of the Wild was tested as well. Playing the game had Switch coming in at about 51.5 degrees Celsius. And when playing FAST RMX, the reading was just above 52 degrees Celsius.
Spawn Wave also attempted to overheat the Switch just to see what temperature is required and what would happen. In order to make that happen, the internal fan was removed. At 67 degrees Celsius, a message displayed and Switch finally shut off.
