[Wii Send-Off] NintendoEverything Staff Opinions!

Our Favorite Non-Launch Wii Channels

One thing that Nintendo did a lot more of with the Wii than I’ve ever noticed prior is experiment with the weird, quirky, and utterly charming possibilities that come with downloadable content. Bypassing the mainstream route of offering extra levels or unlockables for a price, Nintendo used their newfound digital freedom to give players “Channels”, which were the centerpiece of their new user interface on Wii. Over the six year lifespan of the system we saw quite a few different channels, all with remarkably unique ideas; but which ones were the very best? Here’s what we said were the best non-launch (meaning not the photo channel, Wii Shop, etc) channels on the Wii.

Valay says… Nintendo Channel!

“Nintendo Channel. It was actually useful and brought us Nintendo Week for a couple of years.”

Austin says… Check Mii Out Channel!

“When it comes to design, no channel on the Wii had as much Nintendo-y goodness as the Check Mii Out Channel. From the way things were judged (selecting three from a random group), to the way you were scored (running up a big mountain thing), to the way you viewed winners (a long, drawn out parade), to the way you named Miis (only using initials!), the whole experience was a big ball of charming fun. I may have only really used it for the first few months, but I sure had fun…”

Patrick says… Check Mii Out Channel!

“I downloaded a Mii version of Mr. Burns. It was pretty funny.”

Laura says… Check Mii Out Channel!

“I loved the Check Mii Out channel. I have a lot of fun memories from judging contests and looking at creative Miis from all over. It is amazing what some people can do with the features for Miis that are available. I was never creative enough to make anything for the contests but I loved seeing how others could! People were able to take a theme from a contest and make a Mii that perfectly fit it, most of the time in a way you would never expect.”

Jack says… Nintendo Channel!

“While I did enjoy the Check Mii Out Channel and the Everybody Votes Channel, I’m gonna have to side with the Juggalo vote here and vote for the Nintendo Channel; seeing previews and trailers for games from within the very console you could play them in is something you wouldn’t’ve imagined before this generation, and while the DS download play feature didn’t fully pique my interest long-term, it showed absolutely tremendous promise for what Nintendo could do in the future. Plus, Dark Gary.”
