Capcom on the localization of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

With Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney making the jump to 3DS later this month, Capcom is providing new insight into the game. A blog post was added to Capcom-Unity today covering the original localization.

Here’s one excerpt covering how Apollo’s first and last name were determined:

Apollo’s first name was chosen as a way to rival Phoenix’s name. Seeing as a phoenix is a famous mythical creature with a strong presence, we felt that Apollo’s name had to be something equally as powerful. Among the other names we had initially considered were Arthur (for the King Arthur connection) and Justin (a play on “justice”).

As for his last name, “Justice” was actually at the top of the list, but two of the other names we initially threw around were Swift (like the bird, and also to imply that justice is swift) and Startel (as a parallel to his Japanese name, which phonetically sounds the same as the word for “surprise”).

    Localization is hard.

Specially when that game is already mostly localized…

Ah, yes. Ace Attorney’s so stupidly made localization, which can only exist completely outside the canon of the Japanese version, and made it so the newest games, that are focused in what is undeniably Japan, would never reach the West.

Please, tell me more about that mess!

I was pretty sure the most recent games that are NOT localized were set in Europe with the exception of the intro chapter and since they featured an entirely new cast, pretty sure your argument is just one of those abhorrent fan theories that doesn’t have anything to do with reality and is instead based on conspiracy and lack of the actual sales power of the Ace Attorney series — which has a cult following for THOSE specific characters. It is a much bigger risk to introduce a new cast and setting.
