Switch eShop adding PayPal payment option

Posted on August 21, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in 3DS eShop, News, Switch eShop, Wii U eShop

Update: The PayPal option has now been activated worldwide.

Original: The Switch eShop is adding a brand new payment option. Going forward, system owners will be able to use PayPal to add funds to their balance.

PayPal can’t be used directly with Wii U or 3DS. However, any game purchased on Nintendo’s website can be used with PayPal. That means if you’re purchasing a Switch, Wii U, or 3DS game on the site, PayPal is an option if you’re short on funds.

We are seeing the PayPal option on Switch in Japan at present. However, nothing appears to be live in North America or Europe. Today’s announcement did indicate that the PayPal option will be extended worldwide, so we’ll let you know if we see anything.

Excellent! I have been waiting for this for a while.

Does it mean we can finally buy stuff from the JP shop without needed a JP credit card or buying expensive JP only nintendo cards?
I was having to use my 3DS to add funds, if this fixes that then its amazing

Odd, I was using non Japanese cards on Japanese eshop fine… though I didn’t try it on the Switch shop if that’s different, but I can say for 3DS it worked. xD

      • Suraimu

        Might be bank related then.

        • キロ

Oh okay, I had no idea! Thanks.

      • Dascylus

Most cards (primarily debit), aren’t accepted by foreign marketplaces, whereas PayPal is globally accepted.

        • キロ

          Great news then! : )

  • Justin McQuillen

You could always just use your paypal debit card, but this is nice. Makes it even easier to buy games.

    • Gestrid

There’s a PayPal debit card? I thought they only had a credit card.

      • Justin McQuillen

Yeah man they will send you a debit card for free. Comes in handy a lot for when I’m selling on ebay and I need to spend the shipping money i was given directly on shipping.

    • Tlink7

Not in the Netherlands, so I am happy with this option

      • Busterblade

Where is my Direct Debit Nintendo?! Many others have it! *Shakes angry Dutch fist*

    > PayPal is an option if you’re short on funds.

I’m not sure you know how PayPal works. You can add money to your PayPal account in the same way you can add Steam Wallet Funds to your account, and you can also use PayPal as a middleman between the website you’re purchasing from and your bank. Most of the time, the funds are withdrawn from your bank account immediately if you don’t have enough in your PayPal Wallet to cover it.

    • Justin Graham

You can also tie a credit card to your PayPal account in case you want to use your credit card but don’t want to input the CC info directly into the eShop.

  • Mark

Thank goodness. I love how this one move is subtly cutting GameStop out of the used game market even more.

    • RoadyMike

How tho? You’re not buying used games on the eShop, Nintendo is just giving you another way to pay(though not even since you’e already using your credit card)
      Am I missing something here?

      • Mark

By accepting Paypal as payment, Nintendo’s made it easy for a gamer to sell their physical game on eBay for a MUCH higher price than what GameStop would pay them, and then turn around and immediately spend that money on downloadable games. The additional profit you get from selling the game yourself more than offsets the discount that GameStop would give to a used game.

        • How is anyone supposed to see that this is what you wanted to say with your first post?

    God bless you,Nintendo!

  • Princess_Eevee9

I don’t use this, but more options are always nice!

  • Dascylus

    It’s about damn time!

  • Tlink7

Yessss no more buying sh!tty cards in a supermarket

  • ECM

Anyone have any success linking this with a US bank account/PayPal account on the *Japan* eShop (works 100% OK on the US ehop)? I get to the final step and it says I can’t use this PayPal account in Japan. Argh.

    • Ken Oum

Yeah I’ve been having issues connecting my PayPal as well. This is disappointing because I can’t Day 1 Monster Hunter.

  • Kamryn

It doesn’t work. It only says PayPal – ‘Not Linked’ and there is no wheres to link it.
