UT Grand Prix 2017 – official Nintendo x UNIQLO contest winners announced

Last July, UNIQLO kicked off a special UT Grand Prix 2017 contest in partnership with Nintendo. Fans around the world were tasked with creating t-shirt designs based on the big N’s various franchises. Shigeru Miyamoto was even involved as one of the judges.

Over 16,000 people submitted entries for the contest. Today, the full results were announced.

The first place, grand prize winner from Japan is below (men’s / women’s / kids’ designs):

The second place winner was also from Japan:

And lastly, the third place winner from Mexico:

As a reminder, the prizes are as follows:

– Grand Prize: $10,000, an invitation to awards ceremony attended by Shigeru Miyamoto, Switch signed by him, and a special commemorative award
– Second Prize: $3,000, an invitation to awards ceremony attended by Shigeru Miyamoto and Switch signed by him
– Finalist Prizes: $500 each

25 different submissions were ultimately selected, ranging from Kirby to Splatoon. All of the designs are located on the official site here. T-shirts will be going on sale beginning May 19.

    That’s the best the world can come up with? A literal Mario sprite, a inksplat collage and an unclear generic Zelda cave with little series imagery?

      I dunno, I think these work pretty well as t-shirt illustrations. I mean if they were posted as stand-alone works on deviantart or whatever then yeah, that’s not too terribly impressive but as clothing…not bad, not bad.

      I like the Zelda caves, wish there were some in BotW.
      The inksplat is original at least.
      But that 8 bit Mario design … 5 minutes of work and bam, first prize. Must be genius or some such thing I don’t always get ….

    I’ve seen many that were more deserving than the 8bit mario, the King Magikarp one for instance was amazing…

    No offense to 1st place but it’s always the least creative ones that win for some reason.
