Precursor bought art assets from Silicon Knights for Shadow of the Eternals, Nintendo has been supportive
A little bit of interesting news concerning Shadow of the Eternals has surfaced through a Wired report published today.
According to the site, Precursor Games purchased art assets from Silicon Knights, the original studio behind Eternal Darkness.
Precursor Games Paul Caporicci CEO confirmed:
“We did purchase some art assets from Silicon Knights and we were very happy to be able to put those assets created by the talented past employees to use. [Precursor Games then] assembled and did all the rest of the work in CryEngine 3 — totally new engine.”
Shadow of the Eternals came to be after a number of Silicon Knights employees departed from the company. Caporicci left in July, and eventually reached out to others about “starting something brand new.”
“From my experience in July, I was laid off from Silicon Knights with a number of other people and I was saddened, you know, that we were going to go our separate ways. And so I started reaching out to other people and seeing if they were interested in starting something brand new.”
Shadow of the Eternals is coming to Wii U as PC. As far as Nintendo is concerned, Caporicci says that they’ve been supportive, also making note of Precursor’s “great relationship with them”.
“We’ve been in constant communication with [Nintendo], and they’ve been supporting in working with us to put the game on [Wii U]. They even wished us luck right before we launched the campaign. So we have a great relationship with them, and we’ll just see where that goes from here.”
Shadow of the Eternals won’t be able to incorporate a copy of Eternal Darkness’ “sanity meter” functionality due to a patent. However, Precursor’s game can implement similar “sanity effects”.
“I think you’ve seen other games borrow that idea — Batman [Arkham Asylum] had it, for example — so I think there’s a lot of flexibility for us to be able to take themes from that.”
