Yakuza 1&2 HD on Wii U is an “experiment”, 3DS Yakuza unlikely

Yakuza 1&2 HD are heading to Wii U. This is the first time that the series will be gracing a non-PlayStation platform. But even though the pair of remastered HD titles are in the works for Nintendo’s system, this doesn’t guarantee that future Yakuza releases will make their way to Wii U a well.

Yakuza producer Toshihiro Nagoshi said that the decision to make Yakuza 1&2 HD for Wii U is “an experiment”. This will be a gauge of sorts to see just how many Wii U owners are interested in a series like Yakuza.

Nagoshi stated:

“To be honest, we’re not aiming to see if the game will be a smash hit. Our real intention is that we want to see how people respond.”

Nagoshi also said the following when asked if a brand new Yakuza could come to Wii U:

“The existing [Wii U] users are different [from PlayStation owners], so isn’t it hard to say if it makes sense?” …”It isn’t jumping ship to Nintendo hardware. Yakuza 1 & 2 are coming out on the Wii U, and this is what it is.”

You probably won’t be seeing Yakuza on Nintendo’s other main system anytime soon. Nagoshi pretty much ruled out the possibility, and doesn’t seem too interested in creating a spin-off such as PSP’s Yakuza: Black Panther. Nagoshi noted that he’d prefer to develop Yakuza games as action-adventure games.

“It’s not possible. I’d do it if it were okay to have a Yakuza game without many people walking around the city… But it would be forcing it, no?”

Nagoshi also said that it felt like something that wasn’t that desirable.
