NBA 2K18 Switch – details on local play, conflicting news about amiibo support
2K Sports held a media event for NBA 2K18 this week, and the Switch version was finally playable. All sorts of outlets went hands-on with the game and shared information about how it’s shaping up on the system.
According to Game Informer, up to four Switch systems can be linked together for local play. Eight players can participate locally as well.
One uncertainty we have at the moment is amiibo support. Earlier in the week, USgamer said that the functionality will be included with the Switch version. But Game Informer states explicitly that the feature isn’t implemented currently. Visual Concepts apparently told the publication that it could be added via a future update if that’s something they want to do.
A couple of other final, smaller notes. First, while NBA 2K18 can be experienced offline, players are encouraged to stay connected. The digital currency known as VC is deeply tied to player customization, MyTeam card purchases, purchasing a franchise in MyGM, and more, which requires online connectivity. Game Informer also says that you can’t transfer any data like MyGM or MyCareer from other versions of the game (such as the PlayStation 4) and bring that over to Switch.
Also, it’s not in Game Informer’s article, but the site’s Matt Bertz confirmed separately on Twitter that the new mode “The Neighborhood” will be on Switch. This is sort of like a hub / small open world where you can walk around, participate in events, visit shops, and more.
