Divinity: Original Sin 2 Switch dev feels Nintendo needs more powerful hardware
Back in 2019, BlitWorks partnered with Larian Studios on the Switch version of Divinity: Original Sin 2. Co-founder Tony Cabello has gone on record and said that the port “was one of the most difficult projects we’ve ever done”. BlitWorks would later partner with Larian again, as the company’s development team would form the recently-announced Larian Barcelona.
Larian’s main focus at the moment is Baldur’s Gate 3, though it’s unclear if it will end up on Switch. One factor that could influence the situation would be if Nintendo introduced more powerful hardware.
Larian Barcelona spoke with Spanish site 3DJuegos about the possibility of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Switch, just a bit before the OLED model was unveiled and plenty of speculation was circulating regarding more powerful hardware. The studio said:
“We have no idea what Nintendo has in mind, and even if we did, we wouldn’t be able to tell, but when Nintendo has asked us for feedback as developers we have been very clear: either you put out hardware with more power and memory, or Switch will become (like) a new 3DS, totally removed from ‘the real world.'”
As for Baldur’s Gate 3 potentially ending up on the system, the studio noted that “history tends to repeat, so it would not be a surprise if we have to make a Herculean effort again in a few years”.
