After working with Illumination on The Super Mario Bros. Movie – with that partnership continuing in the future – Nintendo is now shifting to live action as part of its collaboration with Sony for The Legend of Zelda.

In an interview with Deadline, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman commented on the project. He said that the Zelda movie “is going to be huge for us” and also said it’ll be “massive”.

Rothman was also asked about how video game movies often haven’t worked. However, in the case of Zelda, it seems fans won’t have a reason to fear as the film is being made in the “closest possible collaboration” with Shigeru Miyamoto. It was previously announced that Miyamoto is on board as a producer.

“Because the movie is being developed and made in the closest possible collaboration with [Nintendo video game designer] Shigeru Miyamoto. He’s a true genius in that world, and it’s really his strong vision that is motivating it. He created it and understands it thoroughly. You only to look at the results of Super Mario Brothers to see.”

The movie based on The Legend of Zelda was announced last November. We know that Wes Ball is on board as director, but other details – including casting – have not yet been shared.
