Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be launching on Switch next year, and it seems to be because of Nintendo that the series is finally making a return.

It’s been eight years since the last entry in the franchise. Why’s not the right time for a comeback? Speaking during an event at the Tokyo Game Show, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino pointed to an unnamed company “N” that wanted a new game released.

Hino said the following:

“Certain individual(s) from the industry really wanted us to release a new game had a strong push coming from company ‘N.’ When I heard these opinions, I started to think it would be good to make a new game so that fans could enjoy the series at the level of quality provided by the latest console.”

It’s hard to think of any company other than Nintendo that would fit here as after all, Professor Layton was prominent on the DS and 3DS with multiple games. Switch did receive Layton’s Mystery Journey, but that wasn’t quite what fans were looking for, and it starred Katrielle, Hershel’s daughter. Now Layton himself will be making a return alongside Luke Triton when Professor Layton and the New World of Steam launches in 2025.

Hino also said during the event that he had qualms about making a new Professor Layton game given that the series had previously saw a “beautiful” conclusion. However, it looks like that “strong push” was enough to make Level-5 go for it.
