Digital Foundry has delivered its verdict on Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch, delving into frame rate, resolution, and more. Much of the analysis here explains how these new versions are different from the PS4 version and even the PS3 original.

– Cutbacks from the PS4 version and even the original PS3 version
– Textures are improved over the PS3 version, foliage is rearranged across the jungle, and color grading is tweaked
– Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition resolution is 1920x1080p when docked on Switch 2
– No dynamic scaling or temporal anti-aliasing
– Also runs at 1080p when docked on Switch 2
– Shadow coverage stripped back on Switch 2 compared to PS4
– Ambient occlusion, shading in and around foliage, under sides of trees, and Lara’s character model also seemingly paired back
– Foliage density also cut back
– Shadows run at a lower quality preset
– Tres effect setting for hair is gone as well
– Another aspect dialed back is depth of field for cutscenes, plus geometry lowered
– Screen space rain effect and rain splatter effect on tops of plants from the PS3 version isn’t on Switch 2 (also not on PS4)
– PS3 has better shadow coverage in spots while geometry quality is higher as well
– Switch 2 has better textures compared to PS3
– Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Switch 2 frame rate is stable at 60
– Very rare dip into the 50s for a cutscene at camp
– Switch 2 version is an upgrade over PS4 in terms of performance
– Switch 1 version runs at 30 FPS
– Resolution for Switch 1 is 864p to 900p
– All textures, effects, geometry, foliage density is a match for Switch 2
– However, further drop in shadow quality on Switch 1 compared to Switch 2
– Also minor differences in the LOD range for foliage on Switch 1
– Switch 1 version has more frame rate dips compared to Switch 2
