Aspyr explains how it approached the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, patches planned
In a recent interview with Nintendo Everything, Aspyr explained how it approached the recently-released Nintendo Switch 2 version of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition.
There’s been a lot of talk about the port since the launch last month. Especially given that there’s also a version for the original Nintendo Switch, some have speculated that the Switch 2 version is based on that one. We asked product manager Jordon Reese about this to clarify the situation.
Reese said in our interview:
“That speculation has some truth to it, though the reality is much more nuanced. The core structure is based on a flexible code branch that allowed us to efficiently target the original Switch’s architecture, which was critical for making it a simultaneous launch across both consoles.
For the Switch 2 version, we didn’t just bump the resolution; we used the new hardware’s capabilities to push for a stable 60 frames per second. While a few of the more complex graphical features from the PS4/Xbox One release weren’t prioritized over achieving that rock-solid performance, the result is a beautiful, highly playable version that feels fantastic in your hands. We believe performance and fluidity are paramount for a portable experience.”
Reese also confirmed that Aspyr intends “to make game improvements via patches over time so that the game can be the best possible experience for all players.” It’s unclear what that will entail, but we’ll keep our eyes out.
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is available on Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch. Stay tuned for our full interview.
