Anita Frasier:

“Accessories was the only category up in dollar sales for the month, driven by sales of Specialty Controllers and Audio. Specialty controllers include the new Playstation Move Navigation controller and Sports Champions bundle, which contributed to this accessory type’s growth.”

“While industry sales of new physical retail sales show a decline versus year ago, it’s important to remember that there is a growing volume of content being sold digitally, or otherwise outside the traditional retail channel. These numbers reflect the largest channel for hardware, software and accessories sales, but there are content sales happening elsewhere.”

“A couple other platforms, specifically the PS3 and the PSP are up on an average sales per week basis as compared to last month (August 2010). Interestingly, the average retail price of hardware increased notably this month, driven primarily by the Xbox 360 Halo:Reach bundle and the PS3 Move bundle.

“Total sales of hardware and software, including PC games, were down 8% from Sept. 2009. Overall sales hit $1.22 billion, compared to $1.32 billion last September.”

“Hardware sales of $383 million were down 19%, compared to Sept. 2009 ($427 million).”

Remember, chances are we won’t receive data for most games, as well as hardware. NPD changed the way they are distributing their data, so most numbers are not available.
