This week Hotel Dusk’s Karl Hyde captures Rebecca Mayes’ heart. After a week of interviews with the national press and two video game song commissions, Rebecca Mayes is happy to get back to the song writing. Her latest Video Game Review song accounts her novice’s experience of the film noire DS game.

With her first two video game song reviews – Press A [http://www.gamepeople.co.uk/audio_wii_wiisports.htm] and I’m a Wolf [http://www.gamepeople.co.uk/audio_wii_okami.htm] – still going strong, she can’t wait to hear what people make of her latest creation. In it she engages with the story and characters of the classic DS adventure Hotel Dusk in a way you’ve never heard before.

* Third-quarter sales up 13% to €508 million.

* Update on the games release schedule.
* Full-year 2008-09 targets adjusted.
* Initial targets for 2009-10.

London, UK – January 22, 2009 – Today, Ubisoft reported its sales for the third fiscal quarter ended December 31, 2008.

Sales

Sales for the third quarter of 2008-09 came to €508 million, up 12.9%, or 17.0% at constant exchange rates, compared with the €450 million recorded for the same period of 2007-08. For the first nine months of fiscal 2008-09 sales totaled €852 million versus €711 million in the corresponding prior-year period, representing an increase of 19.8%, or 24.8% at constant exchange rates.

Third-quarter sales came in slightly higher than the guidance of approximately €500 million issued when Ubisoft released its sales figures for the second quarter of 2008-09. This performance was primarily attributable to:

* The diversity and quality of Ubisoft’s games line-up for the holiday period, with a targeted offering for each type of consumer.
* A solid showing from franchise titles launched during the quarter, particularly Far Cry® 2 and Rayman Raving Rabbids® TV Party which generated sell-in sales of 2.9 million and 1.5 million units respectively and offset the impact of a slower take-off for Prince of Persia® (2.2 million units).
* The creation of a new multi-million units selling franchise – Shaun White Snowboarding – which was the quarter’s number two sports game in the United States and recorded 2.3 million units sell-in worldwide.
* The ongoing success of the Group’s casual games, notably the very robust performance turned in by the Imagine® range fueled by the success of Imagine Teacher and Imagine Wedding Designer. For 2008, Ubisoft’s market share for Nintendo DSTM games is 13.5% in Europe and 12,0% in the United States.

Remember the SEGA teaser page we told you about a few days ago? Since then, the site has received a bit of an update. When you move your mouse over the mushroom, the color changes from blue to red and increases. There’s also Japanese text towards the end of the page and when clicked, a short phrase can be heard. We’re not really sure what the sentence is because we do not speak Japanese. However, all should be revealed when this Friday rolls on by.

Update: Wanted to bump this post to the front page and give you folks an update. Apparently the game is some sort of Ninja action adventure game. No word yet on which platform the game will be heading to, but some have claimed that it is a DS title.

The World Hobby Fair isn’t exactly known for game announcements. This year, however, news is expected when the event begins on January 18 – specifically from EA. The company is expected to be making an announcement for a new game. The mystery title is listed on a special EA site as a “completely original action adventure game.” No further details were provided, but Spore Heroes and the game that Suda51 and Shinji Mikami are working on are two realistic possibilities. Other than EA’s secret title, SimAnimals, Boku to Sim no Machi Kingdom, and Boku to Sim no Machi Party will be playable at the event.

Former 1-UP Entertainment Network and EGM Senior Exec Shane Bettenhausen Joins Ignition Entertainment as Company Continues to Expand Worldwide Operations

Glendale, Calif., January 15, 2009 – Ignition Entertainment Ltd., a UTV Enterprise, a worldwide publisher and developer of videogames, announced today that Shane Bettenhausen has been tapped as the Company’s new Director of Business Development. As the former Senior Executive Editor for influential gaming media outlets Electronic Gaming Monthly and 1-UP.com, Shane’s extensive background and profound knowledge of videogames, coupled with his encyclopedic knowledge of the video gaming industry, perfectly primes Bettenhausen to spearhead the company’s development initiatives moving forward well into the ‘next gen.’

According to Shane, “I’ve spent the past nine years dissecting and evaluating games as a journalist, and I’m incredibly eager and humbled to finally get the chance to learn the other side of the business. I’m tremendously excited to help shape the direction of Ignition’s future products, and I feel that together, we’ll be able to craft experiences that entertain, challenge, and emotionally impact gamers.”

It’s unclear at this time if this game will be released for a Nintendo system – or even for any console – but this footage looks pretty legitimate if you ask me.

“Since I became the head of development for Capcom, there’s really three main pillars to my approach to development. The first one is original titles. Every certain number of years we will make a certain number of original titles. Then, sequels for fans of our current series. The third one is using older IP. Really, it’s a matter of granting what the fans are looking for. We started making those games and people have continued to look for them, and really there is interest out there. As you say, it’s really about respecting the IP and then doing a remake that follows as an extension. Mega Man 9 is one of the games I would add to your list. We’d certainly like to continue doing more of those. The basic idea is that if there’s demand out there—if there’s interest out there—we will respect the IP and go forward.” – Keiji Inafune
