General Nintendo

Last month, Nintendo picked up a trademark for something called “Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace”. This was a US filing. Now the same name has been registered in Japan. I wonder if we’ll hear something about this trademark at E3 in a couple of weeks

Thanks to Jake for the tip.

During the latest episode of IGN’s Nintendo Voice Chat podcast, former GameSpy Technology general manager Todd Northcutt revealed some interesting behind the scenes tidbits about the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. As many of you know, the big N partnered with GameSpy back in the day for Wii and DS titles incorporating online play.

Here’s a summary of what was shared:

– Not getting a copy of Monster Hunter from Capcom and having the game go live in Japan and kill server capacity while not having anyone that spoke Japanese on staff

– Not being able to patch games so Smash on Wii was broken and Gamespy had to fix it all server side

– Meeting with 2 separate Nintendo teams at once and having them go off for 10 mins arguing against each other cause one side wanted one friend code per user/system and messaging and invites and such and the other didn’t all in Japanese while Gamespy Tech sat there seeing it unfold

The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association has unveiled Tokyo Game Show 2014’s main visual. Ippei Gyoubu, who has been involved with the expo since 2010, created the illustration.

The main visual is said to encompass the keywords “change” and “transformation” of TGS 2014’s theme: Changing Games: “The Transformation of Fun”.

Gyoubu said of the image:

“I created this year’s main visual by visualizing the “emergence” based on the keyword “change/transformation” in the theme. A caterpillar becomes a chrysalis, breaks down its body and
reconstructs itself to be born as a completely different creature. In a gaming world, technological
innovation has evolved in the last 10 years and now that we’ve passed through the revolutions such
as internet, social media and smartphone, I feel that we’ve come close to the time of the birth of a
completely new world with all those revolutions blending well. I created this visual based on that
feeling. This main visual expresses the ambiguity of whether the visual is a reflection of the metal or not, it’s a flat graphic or not, it’s stereoscopic or planar, and she’s a human or a robot.”

VG247 has published a new interview with Kirby Triple Deluxe director Shinya Kumazaki, HAL Laboratory managing director Yurie Hattori, and the team’s public relations staff Satoshi Ishida. One of the more interesting responses came about when Kumazaki and Hattori were asked about potential interest in making a fully 3D Kirby game somewhat like Super Mario Galaxy.

Both of the Kirby devs expressed significant interest in creating such a title, with Kumazaki stating that he believes “there are also more than a few users who’d appreciate being able to freely run around a sprawling map, fighting with copy abilities.” He also said, “I hope that one of our next challenges will be to produce a Kirby game in full 3D that still maintains the same depth of play our fans have come to expect.”

Check out Kumazaki and Hattori’s complete comments below.

Square Enix has been keen on putting Dragon Quest games on smartphones as of late. But with the series’ next entry, fans can rest easy knowing that it won’t be going the mobile route again.

Creator Yuji Horii, speaking with V Jump, confirmed that he wants to be “more aggressive” in making the next Dragon Quest and it’s not intended for smartphones. Given the franchise’s recent history, it might be safe to say that we’ll be seeing it on a Nintendo platform.
