Nintendo DS Becomes All-Time Best-Selling Video Game System; Wii Sells More Than 7 Million for Third Consecutive Year

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The close of 2010 produced two sales milestones for Nintendo in the United States.

According to Nintendo’s internal sales figures, the Nintendo DS™ family of portable video game systems has sold more than 47 million in the United States since the original model launched in November 2004. That tally makes Nintendo DS the nation’s best-selling video game system of all time.

For the second major milestone of 2010, Nintendo’s internal figures show that the Wii™ home console marked its third consecutive calendar year with U.S. sales of more than 7 million – a feat never before accomplished in the history of video games by a home console. To date, the Wii system has sold more than 34 million in the United States alone.

You may have noticed that there wasn’t one of these preview features for last month, the reason being that —besides Fluidity and Super Mario All-Stars— absolutely nothing of note came out. January, on the other hand, is full of notable new releases. None of them are really massively hyped up games, but I’ve written a few reasons why they should still be on your radar. Anyway, here are the games that’ll kick off the New Year for Nintendo fans:

Remember 2010? Seems like only last week, right? Time marches on, but one thing hasn’t changed: Every Monday still brings a fresh lineup of downloadable games to the Wii™ Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi™ Shop. If you’re new to the WiiWare™ or Nintendo DSiWare™ services, now’s a great time to browse and discover hundreds of available titles. From puzzle games to platformers, brain games to action-packed shooters, you’ll find something to please any hand-held or console gaming appetite. The WiiWare service even features demo versions of select games for zero Wii Points™, giving players the chance to sample them before deciding to download the full versions. You can also explore the Virtual Console™ service, which offers a wide range of video game classics that can be played on your Wii system. The future sounds pretty fun so far, doesn’t it? Happy New Year!

This short animation can be seen if you let DK rest for a bit. Interestingly, as the video hints, it seems as though he’s actually playing the original Donkey Kong on the DS. You can hear a classic sound from the game for about seven seconds in.
