Freedom Wars is back after a decade, and if things go well with the remaster, it could lead to a sequel.

Director Takashi Tsukamoto was speaking about the game’s return in an interview with IGN. He said that Dimps has “been looking for opportunities to release something, maybe a sequel – something related to Freedom Wars”, but “it was very difficult to set up a team and nothing was really lining up.” That’s when the idea of a remaster came about.

Tsukamoto went on to speak about why it’s taken so long for Freedom Wars to return. In that same interview, he mentioned that there wasn’t an opportunity previously. Then after reaching an agreement with Sony for the license, “they were able to partner up with Bandai Namco, and it just so happens that it’s about 10 years later that all of it started coming to fruition.”

How about that Freedom Wars sequel then? According to Tsukamoto, there’s hope that if the remaster is successful, that could be enough to “take the next step into potentially releasing a sequel.” It’s tough to say if that will actually happen, but the team has “tons of ideas we’d want to implement” for a potential new game.

Freedom Wars Remastered launches for Switch on January 10, 2025. Check out more coverage here.
