Gaming sales on the rise during Japanese holiday

Gaming sales were particularly strong in Japan last week. With the Obon holiday in full swing, it’s a good sign. Hardware and software both outdid last year’s Obon, and Media Create has more on that front.

Splatoon 2 and Dragon Quest XI made major contributions to the overall software sales. The two games sold 88,000 copies and 208,000 copies respectively (the latter figure is Dragon Quest’s 3DS and PlayStation 4 sales combined).

Another contributing factor is that staple titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold well during the Obon holidays. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example, sold another 17,000 copies.

Hardware-wise, New 2DS XL and Switch made notable contributions to the overall sales this week. 181,000 overall units were sold during the week, up 125.41 percent from same week last year.

We could be seeing another strong week between August 14 and August 20. Media Create will share its next report on Wednesday.
