How to change Yoshi’s color in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
If you’ve been playing Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and are wondering how to change Yoshi’s colors, we’ve got you covered.
Mini-Yoshi is the fourth partner who joins your adventure in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. And unlike the other partners, he’s actually (kind of) customizable. You first meet Yoshi when he’s inside an egg, and when he eventually happens, he can be one of seven potential colors: green, red, blue, orange, pink, black, or white. You can manipulate Yoshi’s egg so that it hatches in the color that you want. That being said, once Yoshi hatches and you save the game, you cannot change his colors. They’re locked like that forever. Here’s our full guide to Yoshi colors in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and how to get the one you want.
How to pick Yoshi colors
If you’re looking to change some Yoshi colors in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you might want to pull out a timer for this one. As you progress through the Glitz Pit, you’ll eventually face the Iron Adonis Twins as your next challengers. You can check your next opponents to see who’s up next, and when you see them in the queue, make sure to save your game. Head outside and you’ll find a colorful egg hopping around at the hot dog stand. Chase it around and the egg will jump on top of the stand. To get there, go to east Glitzville, Spin Jump on the blue switch, and then go up the stairs. Once there, you’ll find a paper airplane spot that will let you fly over and retrieve it.
Remember the timer from earlier? Start the timer, because as soon as you talk to the egg and it joins your party, a countdown begins. And the Yoshi color you get depends on how long you take from recruiting the egg to going into the minor-league room, ranking for a match, and then fleeing from the Iron Adonis Twins (who you currently cannot defeat otherwise, as it requires Yoshi to hatch and use a special move). The Yoshi color is decided after you flee and the match ends. Here are the corresponding times:
- Green Yoshi: Before the timer reaches 6 minutes.
- Red Yoshi: After the timer reaches 6 minutes but before it gets to 9.
- Blue Yoshi: After the timer reaches 9 minutes but before it gets to 12.
- Orange Yoshi: After the timer reaches 12 minutes but before it reaches 15.
- Pink Yoshi: After the timer reaches 15 minutes but before it reaches 18.
- Black Yoshi: After the timer reaches 18 minutes but before it gets to 19. Tough one!
- White Yoshi: After the timer reaches 19 minutes but before it gets to 20.
The last two Yoshi colors are available for much less time, so they might require a few resets. If it takes longer than 20 minutes for you to flee from the Iron Adonis Twins after recruiting the egg, the cycle will start over again from green. Do note that the Yoshi colors are purely cosmetic and have no effect on gameplay, and once you save the game your Yoshi color is locked in for the rest of your playthrough. You can also name him, and “Yoshi” is the default name if you don’t choose an answer.
