Know Your Friends is Ubisoft’s unreleased Wii U game
Ubisoft isn’t planning any additional games for Wii U. However, you may recall that the company said it has a title that finished development a long time ago, yet has not been released. Thanks to the folks at Unseen64, we now know which title Ubisoft is referring to. And it’s something that has technically been made known already.
It was about a year ago that the ESRB rated Ubisoft’s “Know Your Friends” for Wii U. It turns out that this is in fact the game Ubisoft has been sitting on.
Here’s the full ESRB description for those who haven’t heard about Know Your Friends in the past:
This is a multiplayer trivia game in which players form teams to answer questions about their friends’ personalities. Questions are presented in multiple-choice format, as players attempt to guess teammates’ answers. Out of hundreds of possible questions, some contain suggestive/sexual references (e.g., “[Player] is wondering what he would accept doing in the name of love during a steamy night in?” “{Player] is choosing 3 objects for a sensual moment as a couple,” and “Which part of the female anatomy do people look at first?”— accompanying images depict cleavage and a close-up of a woman’s buttocks (wearing jeans). Some questions are accompanied by still photos of objects such as condoms, whips, and handcuffs; other images depict men and women in revealing outfits (e.g., swimsuits, underwear or lingerie). One question, about a nude beach, briefly depicts a man’s bare buttocks. During the course of the game, questions may also reference alcohol and tobacco (e.g., “[Player] is thinking about the things she has done after too much drinking with friends”—the accompanying image depicts a man bent over a toilet; another question asks what object relieves stress—the accompanying image depicts a pack of cigarettes.). One of the screens depicts a still image of a man bound to a chair (e.g., “[Q]Using torture in difficult times is…”).
According to Unseen64’s Liam Robertson, Know Your Friends was mainly in development throughout 2013 and was done by the start of 2014. As it stands now, the project is absolutely done with development. The game is just sitting around at Ubisoft at the moment.
Robertson noted in the latest Unseen64 podcast that Ubisoft Paris (Red Steel, Just Dance, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier) worked on Know Your Friends. It’s unclear if they were the primarily developer, but they most definitely contributed.
Know Your Friends features a papercraft art style; like paperclippings arranged in animation. Players would take pictures of their face as well as their friends’ faces, and place them on characters.
The game itself is a party/quiz experience. There would have been an emphasis on using the GamePad throughout different social interactions. One question has each player arrange one another on the GamePad based on who is most likely to invite the others over for dinner.
Know Your Friends suppports local and online multiplayer. There is apparently support for up to five players.
Will Know Your Friends ever make it out to the general public? Only time will tell!
