Koei Tecmo explains why it decided to give Fatal Frame 2 a remake

Koei Tecmo has commented on the decision to come out with Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake.

The company has been doing more and more with the series in recent years. There have been a couple of remasters, but now Fatal Frame 2 is receiving the full-blown remake treatment.

This is the first time that there’s been any sort of remake for a Fatal Frame game in the modern era. In a 4Gamer interview published a little while back, the team explained how this project happened in the first place.

We get to hear from Makoto Shibata, who’s been a director on the franchise since its original release as well as Hidehiko Nakajima, who is largely directing the action. Find our translation of their comments below.

Nakajima: In the Fatal Frame series we previously released remasters of Maiden of Black Water and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. We received praise from fans all over the world that “the visuals were much better”, but at the same time lots of people asking “What about a Crimson Butterfly remake or remaster?” That led us to begin thinking about developing it.

Shibata: Amongst all of the requests for “We want a remaster of this!” and “We want a new game”, the most common were those waiting for a Crimson Butterfly remake. We really understood how much the title was valued and loved by everyone. Even within the company we had opinions from people saying “I played that a long time ago”, and “That? I loved it!”, so we also wanted to make a remake for those people too.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on March 11, 2026. Get a closer look at the game here.
