It’s been almost two decades since Super Mario World saw its first release in Japan. In recent years, the title landed on the Game Boy Advance and the Wii’s Virtual Console as well. Might we see the game on the 3DS, too? Or how about a true sequel? Shigeru Miyamoto teased the possibility of bringing a Super Mario World project to Nintendo’s upcoming portable in a recent interview, sharing a few ideas that could work with 3D.

“Well you know actually a lot of ideas that I would have liked to have implemented in Super Mario World have come to life in later Mario games since then. But the question gets me thinking about what fun it would be to create a Super Mario World game on the Nintendo 3DS and how we could use the depth and the sense of distance offered by 3D visuals on the world map and on the maps in that game, so that you have Bullet Bills flying at you from a distance and popping up off the screen.”

Following his response, Miyamoto was asked immediately if that was a small hint. He said:

“I don’t know… Maybe!”
