Rein says he wasn’t laughing at Wii U, points out UE3 critical success, anticipates more UE3-supported games
When asked about the possibility of Unreal Engine 4 support for Wii U during a recent Q&A session, Epic’s Mark Rein seemingly laughed at the question – as did the entire room of journalists. But on Twitter, Rein said that he wasn’t laughing at the system. Rather, he thought it was silly how the original question didn’t include the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 as well.
@izaki_one I wasn’t laughing at Nintendo or WiiU. I was laughing at how the question only included WiiU and not 360 or PS3.

@geeheeb666 well that was certainly not my intent and I feel sorry for being caught off guard by the question and the dumb way I answered it

The Wii U won’t be directly capable of supporting Unreal Engine 4. Rein, however, doesn’t see that as a big problem given the successful track record of Unreal Engine 3 titles on Metacritic. Earlier on Twitter, he wrote:
2 of the top-10 all-time highest rated games on WiiU, according to MetaCritic, are made with Unreal Engine 3!

5 of the top-20 all-time highest rated games on PS3, according to MetaCritic, are made with Unreal Engine 3!

7 of the top-20 all-time highest rated games on Xbox 360, according to MetaCritic, are made with Unreal Engine 3!

No other engine even come closes to that kind of success.. For Xbox 360, PS3 and WiiU there is no better engine than Unreal Engine 3!

And when one fan pointed out that the Wii U is just a few months old, Rein noted that he expects more Unreal Engine 3-supported titles to pop up in the future:
RT @bunnyspatial: @markrein Thats a really short all-time, Mr. Rein. <-WiiU is much newer. I suspect we’ll see more UE3 games coming for it

No current-gen platform will support Unreal Engine 4 directly. But because the technology is scalable, developers will in one sense be able to release such games on the Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 – albeit with some downgrades.
