Rumor: Switch successor launching in second half of 2024, dev kits now with key partners
VGC claims to have insight into the Switch’s successor with development kits now in the hands of key partner studios.
According to the site, Nintendo “is likely to release new hardware during the second half of 2024”. Doing so would allow the company to bulk up on shipments and ensure that ample stock is available.
The report goes on to say that the new device would have a portable mode similar to the current Switch. Given the success Switch has seen with its hybrid nature, that would certainly make sense.
As for the screen, Nintendo may opt to go the LCD route. While an OLED screen was finally introduced for Switch in 2021, having the part for a Switch successor could raise costs. An LCD screen would make things cheaper, and VGC points out that something else to consider is the “increased storage needed for higher fidelity games.” Switch only has 32GB of internal memory, thought that can be significantly expanded with an SD card.
The only other detail shared in the report is that the Switch successor will accept physical games via a cartridge slot. Nothing else is known currently such as potential plans for backwards compatibility.
