Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance daily demon vol. 34 – White Rider
The latest Daily Demon video for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance has been released by Atlus. Today, the first of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, White Rider, takes the spotlight.
A demon of the Fiend race, White Rider has been a series staple since Shin Megami Tensei II, and returns in Vengeance as part of the Return of the True Demon questline, which was originally a DLC quest in Shin Megami Tensei V. The Megami Tensei wiki has some background information about the origins of this demon, which you can read below:
“Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, ‘Come and see.’ And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.”
—Revelation 6:1-2.The White Rider, or White Horseman, is the first of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to appear before John the Apostle, according to Christian scripture. He traditionally represents conquest, bearing a bow of conquest, with the “pestilence” association first appearing in the 20th century. This horseman is one of confusion among theologians as some believe he is representative of divine conquest (and thus a force of good) while others think of him as a representative of unlawful conquest (and thus a force of evil).
Other interpretations include the rider of the white horse as Christ, whose conquest represents the spread of Christianity, or the Antichrist, who rides across the world to deceive those who are pious and faithful. Regardless of his morality, the White Horseman is said to arrive and sweep across the world, unleashing civil war and internal strife, which separates him from War, who embodies more open warfare.
