SimCopter 64 playable build found more than 20 years after cancellation
SimCopter debuted in 1996 for PC, but some may be unaware that an N64 version (for the 64DD) was in the works at one point – aptly titled SimCopter 64. The game was even shown off for Nintendo’s older console at E3 1997, though it ultimately never saw the light of day. Fans apparently weren’t impressed with the graphics, and after some consideration was given to a Japan-only launch, the port was cancelled entirely.
It’s been well over twenty years, but amazingly enough, a playable build has been found of SimCopter 64. Reddit user a707northbayer made the discovery and says he picked it up from someone who worked in the game industry. This person sold and traded him dev systems in addition to a few games like this one.
a707northbayer posted a short video of the game showing the first level, which we have below. The build is dated for December 26, 1997.
There could be more news and footage to come from the discovery as a707northbayer mentioned wanting to back up and preserve the unfinished version of SimCopter64. If and when that’s done, it could lead to more gameplay surfacing online and who knows whatever else. If anything else comes to light, we’ll let you know.
