According to the November 5 Square Enix sales briefing that was released to the public earlier this week, the publisher’s action RPG, NEO: The World Ends With You, did not meet the company’s early expectations for sales. From the outline of their sales results:

While “NEO: The World Ends with You” was well received by users, it has underperformed our initial expectations.

Despite this, Square Enix also expressed that they are hopeful that the title will continue to sell well over a long period of time. Further along, Square Enix plans to “Strengthen their IP Ecosystem”, as well as adapt the company better for a COVID-19 outbreak world, and further expand into other domains such as NFTs and blockchain usage.

NEO: The World Ends With You arrived on Switch just last June, and just as Square Enix reported here, it received mostly positive reviews from various gaming news outlets and reviewers, including our own. As the direct successor to The World Ends With You, an action RPG released on DS and later improved for a release on Switch as The World Ends With You: Final Remix, many players were looking forward to its release, and Square Enix expected it to perform very well.
