Square Enix still talking with Nintendo about putting Final Fantasy XIV on Switch

Over the past couple of years, we’ve repeatedly heard from Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida about wanting to have the MMORPG on more platforms, including Switch. The only barrier brought up in the past relates to cross-platform play. Nintendo and Microsoft fully support the feature, and Sony is starting to get on board as well. That means a Switch version is even more likely to happen now.

Speaking with GameSpot, Yoshida confirmed that Square Enix is still talking with Nintendo as well as other companies and are currently “in negotiations”. He said:

“Talks with platform-holders has been going on. The fundamental philosophy with Final Fantasy XIV is we want it on labels with cross-platform play with any devices, hardware possible. So as long as the regulations with the counterpart hardware companies … we can actually pass that, then the possibility, the chance is quite high [of Final Fantasy XIV coming to Xbox and Nintendo systems].

So we are talking with Nintendo, Microsoft, and Google, of course; we cannot say anything at the moment because we are still in negotiations, but once we have details we can make an announcement; we can bring the news to everyone. We are currently negotiating will all those platforms.”

Throughout the interview, Yoshida reiterated that Square Enix wants Final Fantasy XIV Online to reach as many people as possible. If a Switch version does happen though, it won’t be free-to-play (or any platform for that matter) since doing so would break “either the community or the game itself”.
