Switch 2 becomes fastest-selling Nintendo system in UK history
Thanks to data from NielsenIQ, we have some insight into the initial hardware performance of Nintendo Switch 2 in the UK.
The newly-released system is the fastest-selling Nintendo machine in UK history. Previously, Nintendo 3DS held the record with 113,000 units sold.
Nintendo Switch 2 also outsold the launch of the Switch by more than two to one. The original Nintendo Switch sold over 80,000 units for its UK launch back in the day, though the console was very supply constrained.
Nintendo Switch 2 is doing well for a Nintendo platform in the UK, but it’s behind a few PlayStation consoles. If we look at consoles and remove handhelds from the equation, it’s the fourth best-selling console in terms of units (behind PS5, PS4 and Xbox Series) and the third best-ever in terms of revenue (behind PS5 and Xbox Series).
As pointed out by The Game Business, the UK is one region where it hasn’t been easy for Nintendo. While the Wii was the best-selling console overall, that went to the Xbox 360 in the UK. Also, Nintendo Switch is behind the PS4 in the UK despite being the best-selling console worldwide for the past eight years.
The list of best-selling console launches in the UK are as follows (handhelds not included):
1. PlayStation 5
2. PlayStation 4
3. Xbox Series
4. Nintendo Switch 2
5. PlayStation 3
6. Xbox One
7. Nintendo Wii
8. Nintendo Switch
9. Xbox 360
10. Xbox One X
We also received the latest UK games chart this week, revealing that Mario Kart World most recently took home the top spot. The full top 40 can be found here.
