UK: Switch sales were up over 52% in 2020 compared to 2019, other tidbits

A new report from GamesIndustry provides information about the games market in the UK from 2020. This follows the news that Switch outsold the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One during the year.

Here are the notable tidbits:

– The most successful boxed games publisher was Nintendo
– Nintendo accounted for 20.5% of all physical games sold in 2020
– The biggest digital games publisher of the year was Ubisoft, with an 18% market share
– If physical and digital are combined, Ubisoft was #1 with a 14.3% market share, followed closely by EA (13.7%)
– However, Nintendo digital sales are not included
– In terms of purely retail sales, PS4 was #1 with a 37.4% market share, but Switch was close behind with 35.1%
– Switch was the best-selling games console in the UK for 11 of the 12 months in 2020
– Switch sales were up 52.2% last year compared with 2019
– The single most successful console version was the normal Switch with neon Joy-Con controllers
