Dragon Quest VIII pre-load live on the North American 3DS eShop

Posted on January 7, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News

Dragon Quest VIII can now be pre-loaded from the North American 3DS eShop. It’s a meaty game, requiring 24,413 blocks. This amounts to 3051.625 MB (about 3 GB).

Dragon Quest VIII launches on January 20. If you pre-load, you can download most of the data ahead of time. Then when it officially releases on the eShop, you’ll only need a small update to begin playing.

Ouch this is more than Devil Survivor 2, which is like 22k blocks

I recall that when the Sun/Moon preload went live, Brian mentioned how it was the fourth-largest 3DS game, with Xenoblade in first and both Bravelys in second and third. I may be wrong, but this size sounds like its on par with those.

And… if I’m not wrong this brings the Nintendo-published list of DQ games to 5? The original on NES, VI and IX on DS, and now VII and VIII on 3DS?

I’m assuming this is a good place to start out with Dragon Quest? I’m honestly curious about the PS2 version since I’ve heard it has some differences.

It is a good start point.

Yes, but maybe no too ?
It’s possible the game’s more modern production values may lead to disappointment if you intend to play previous episodes later on.
I’m an advocate of starting with the remakes of DQ IV,V and VI but that’s just me.

As for differences, from what I gathered the PS2 version is better looking and has random encounters, the 3DS version has symbol encounters and additional content. To me the 3DS version seems more convenient, but the PS2 one really looks much better.

DQ I, II, and III for virtual console or combo-release on 3DS please. No remaster needed….

To Brian– The Nintendo eShop is no more. It is now called the “Nintendo Game Store”.
