The Wii U Virtual Console will be receiving DS support, Nintendo has confirmed.

Nintendo hasn’t shared concrete details, but the company suggested during its investor briefing today that the GamePad will split the game action in half – at least based on the image above.

This is definitely unexpected. Nice, though.

ANY new systems on the VC would be appreciated, including the ones they already promised last year.

I know where I’m gonna play The world ends with you!

bring on The World Ends With You, FFIV DS, Pokemon D/P/Plat/HG/SS/B/W/B2/W2, Chrono Trigger, New Super Mario Bros. to the wii vc

This is nice but would it not make more sense to bring it to 3DS first (same goes for the GBA titles just announced). Still it is good they are bringing them on Wii U. I hope cross-buy follows with future VC.

There’s already DS backwards compatibility on 3DS. The whole point of Virtual CONSOLE is to play old games w/o having to buy the entire system. That’s why Wii had N64 and not GCN, why DSi had GB instead of DS, and why Wii U has DS and not Wii.

      • It’d be nice for fans of downloadable games to have the option of saving DS games to an SD card.

No, the reason Wii didn’t have GCN VC was mainly because of memory limitations. GCN games were, on average, around 1GB, while the Wii had only 512MB internal memory.

I must also say that DS VC on 3DS isn’t a bad idea. It would be very nice to just download DS games to have on my system at all times, and if VC on the Wii was any indication, Nintendo would offer upscaling to the DS games, making them look less fuzzy on a 3DS (upscaling is easier to due via VC styled emulation, where a whole new emulator is written on a per-software basis, as opposed to the low-end emulation used by backwards compatibility modes).

DSi didn’t really have any VC. It had some Game and Watch stuff, but I’d hardly call that anything. 3DS DEFINITELY should have GBA VC, and I don’t see why there would be an issue with DS on 3DS. Likewise, I’d love Wii VC on Wii U. Why shouldn’t they? Again, upscaling. Dolphin has showed me how great Wii games can look whilst upscaled, and I’d love to see that on my Wii U.

If you don’t like said games, then just don’t buy them if they come out. I, on the other hand, would much enjoy DS and Wii VC games. It would just be more convenient, and I really doubt these releases COULD get in your way if you don’t like them.
