XC1 got 36/40 and XCX 34/35 so tahts really good for XC2.

    • Robert Hastings

      You mean 34/40

      • Why do you guys know this pointless information?

        • AJK

The only way you can gauge the potential of a game pre release and then actually spending money on the game yourself is by reviews (for better or worse). How else would you suggest deciding whether to buy something?

          • These aren’t reviews. This isn’t math. These are opinions assigned a random number. And the numbers you know are for games that are already out, so you’re not “gauging potential,” you just hold a trove of worthless info in your head.

I’d suggest you actually read a review. Instead you’ve invested more energy into doing math with numbers that aren’t actually reliable data, because they represent opinions.

You can also, believe it or not, wait for a game to come out. Then you can do all kinds of wondrous things like:

            1. borrow it from someone else
            2. try it in a store demo
            3. buy it at a discounted price so the decision isn’t the biggest one in your life
            4. buy it used, so you can return it if you don’t like it
            5. rent it
            6. buy it and sell it if it’s not fun
            7. try it at someone else’s house

          • AJK

I agree that the numbers themselves are not too useful, but reviews also just ‘represent opinions. Many of the alternatives you suggest to using reviews also require spending money though.

          • Brad Lawrence

Agreed. This isn’t a 40 point scale either. these are 4 different 10 point scales. And I agree to your point, if you don’t actually read the review itself, you don’t know why the score exists or if the good or bad points are important to you.

        • AJK

          Its called google.

  • GoldenTriforce

Quick note: OG Xenoblade got a 36/40. Sonic Forces got a 35/40. I wouldn’t read too deeply into this.

    • GoldenTriforce

BTW, anyone know when the online review embargo ends for the game

      • Mark

Pretty sure it’s the day before it comes out. You know, ’cause of the security issues they’ve had recently.

        • GoldenTriforce

I know, just wanted to be sure. i will say I am glad they actually sent copies at the normal time, being a JRPG and stuff

      • Sander Noordijk

        november 30th

    • Mark

Dude, I was JUST about to say that.

… used to have a good deal of respect for Famitsu reviews. What the heck happened?

    • Dark Rain

Well The Evil Within 2 and Destiny 2 having 35/40 too.

    • bigevilworldwide

And they also gave Resident Evil 6 a 39/40

  • Buru

Any plans of posting the written reviews for XC2 later?

    • Carlos

They usually do. We have to wait for the embargo before reviewers can put them up though.

  • Ser2k2

    Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) – 9/9/9/9
    Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U) – 9/9/8/8

    • 4/3/2/1 – Liftoff

      • Ser2k2

        X/X/X/X – Why X?

    • bigevilworldwide

      Resident Evil 6 (PS3/360) – 10/10/10/9

      • Ser2k2

        Nintendogs (Nintendo DS) – 10/10/10/10 40/40

  • FrostedFireFly

I haven’t really looked at a Famitsu score in detail before and wondered why it was always scored out of 40. Now that I know it’s added from four “Out of 10s”, can someone tell me what each of those Out of 10s represent?

Is it 4 different people or 4 different aspects on the game? Would appreciate it if someone could pull me out of the dark.

    • Mark

Four different reviewers all give their own review; the total review for the game is a sum of those reviews. To me, it seems to be a fair and balanced way to review, provided that you have enough people to do a decent review of the game.

      • FrostedFireFly

Ah thanks. That really helps to know and I’m glad Xenoblade 2 has good impressions based on this.

  • Sinton

This tells me that XC2 is solid, but not a modern masterpiece. I guess this will score about the same as XCX.

    • Robert Hastings

I honestly wouldn’t look into Famitsu review scores, because Sonic Forces, Destiny 2 and Evil Within 2 all got a 35/40 and this got a 36/40. I would wait for edge or the other reviews before we say anything.

      • Guy you need to get a life if you’re assigning some meaning to a series of random numbers that represent a magazine’s opinions

        • Sinton

          Thanks for your input.

          • Even an argument is assigned the sterile classification of “input” with you. Do you seriously not see the problem here?

          • Sinton

What problem? Honestly, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Famitsu has reviewed a game (I’ve already pre-ordered, mind you). I’m trying to have a discussion about what Famitsu’s review can mean for what other reviewers will think of the game. With Zelda and Mario we could, for instance, believe that the high scores would mean the games would be great (which turned out to be true).

While I’m trying to have a discussion, you’re getting riled up, telling me to get a life. What could I possibly learn from having a discussion with you?

        • GoldenTriforce

He was basically saying don’t pay attention to these review scores, where did you get the impression otherwise?

      • Sinton

        This got 35/40.

When it comes to Sonic Forces, it seems to me that those that bought the game enjoy it a lot. While I haven`t played it, I believe it`s just perceived as cool to hate Sonic (see Push Square, for instance).

I don`t believe Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will get Persona 5 reviews by the western media when Famitsu gives it a 8,75/10. I could see it get lower than XCX, though…

        • Guy why don’t you wait until the game is out and you actually play it before you decide if it’s good

          • bruce livingston

Not everyone has the money to buy a game just to try it. Reviews give us a general idea of what to expect ahead of time. No one is saying that you should base your purchase solely on reviews, but there’s no harm in reading them.

          • You’re not reading reviews. You’re reading a series of random numbers.
If you don’t have the money to buy a game the exact day it comes out, wait til it goes on sale. Sell the game if you don’t like it.
There are literally a million other games. A lot of them are free. You can’t create a problem for yourself and then complain about how difficult it is.

          • AJK

Why do you do what you do? Serious question, as your comments go beyond trolling into the realm where it appears you have problems with your emotions and your understanding of how most people think.

        • Robert Hastings

          My bad.

          • Sinton

            No problem.

Have you tried any of the games you mentioned?

          • Robert Hastings

I have and tbh Destiny should have been lower because if felt to much like Destiny 1, Sonic was average at best, and Evil Within 2 had problems like clunky controls and number of glitches that have happened to me.

          • Sinton

Well, let`s hope Famitsu is to the mark on their review of XC2.

          • Robert Hastings

The only thing I will give credit to them for is that they did give a better score than XCX and from what I’ve heard from people who got review copies is that the game is better than XCX and not expecting it to get XC1 review scores. All I want this game is to get good or great review scores and for it to sell better than the last 2 games because both games have always been 100,000 short of 1,000,000 and I think this series deserves to sell more.

          • Sinton

Agree. I`m hoping for a mid to high 80s review scores. If that happens, I think it`ll sell better than the two others. The first game was released late in the Wii`s life cycle, and XCX was released on a «failed» console. But JRPGs are a beast of their own, so it`s hard to tell.

          • Robert Hastings

Plus it didn’t help that XC1 was a gamestop exclusive as well. I do think I will enjoy this more because XC2 looks like it has more options to customize you characters (besides not being able to change clothing) for battle compared to the last two game and I always like having more options in games.

  • Aline Piroutek

Don’t care about scores people. Scores are made to sell games.
As you can see, Nobunaga Ambition> Xenoblade 2.
    What

    • R.Z.

Well, Nobunaga’s ambition is pretty solid as a series I heard, so maybe ?

      • Nhat Anh Hoang

Solid but better than Xenoblade 2? Nope, never

        • R.Z.

The Xenoblade games are pretty hit or miss with people, some love them some don’t.
And Xenoblade 2 has that awful art direction that could be a serious handicap to some (personally I’m just buying it because it’s part of the series, if I didn’t have a great experience with the previous episodes I wouldn’t have cared).

Also let’s not forget that each game is supposedly rated on its own merits. That a strategy game is rated higher than an RPG just means it’s good in its genre supposedly better than the RPG in its own, not that the strategy game is better than the RPG.
A “perfect” puzzle game could get a better score than Zelda or something, it would be totally logical.

Lastly, it’s fu**in’ Famitsu, so who cares ?
(me, seemingly, since I wrote those paragraphs above …)
          😛

          • Nhat Anh Hoang

Agree, like Resident Evil 6 is 39 on famitsu

  • WTFISTHISSHIT?

One of their cons was that Xenoblade 2 was too grindy but DQ11 got 40/40 and yet, its one of the most grindy video game series.

    Famitsu logic.

    • ben

      I mean… DQ11 also had a huge marketing budget… wink wink…

  • Mark

In all honesty, it’ll be interesting to see how this reviews in the West. I could see this going differently, not necessarily because Kotaku reviewed poorly, but because they represent more the culture that this game is primarily designed for. From what I’ve seen so far, Xenoblade puts the J in JRPG, and that’s just not everyone’s cup of tea. Not that it *can’t* be rated highly (after all, see Persona 5) but I think that these games have a slightly higher mountain to climb over here than other games.

  • Tlink7

    7/-10/567/7,9
    – my a$$

  • Game_God

When you see them scoring Nobunaga’s Ambition at 36, FF XV at 38, Sonic Force at 35, Destiny 2 at 35 & then give Xeno 2 a 35 it only reinforces what has been a trend for the last decade, that is that Famitsu is no more a relevant, trustworthy gaming outlet, they sell out easily!

    • hi v3.0

This, seeing how FFXV got a 38 just baffles me

    • Robert Hastings

Wait, FF15 got a higher score. Why do I even bother with Japanese reviews even more.

      • bigevilworldwide

They also gave Resident Evil 6 a 39/40

        • Robert Hastings

Jesus Christ. That’s terrible. I’m guessing they gave RE 7 a lower score?

        • Game_God

No way Resi 6 is a 39, not even if it had hot chocolate on it!!! Famitsu reviewers should stop snorting wasabi…

  • Puffdaddy

Famistu lost all crediability with thier Sonic Forces review.

    • bigevilworldwide

Wait didn’t everyone claim they lost credibility when they gave Resident Evil 6 a 10/10/10/9 39/40 review……

  • YoungTheFish

Scores aside, I really doubt XC2 will reach the height of XC…

    • Robert Hastings

I doubt it too, but it does look like it will be better than XCX.
