FIFA 18 on Switch currently has no way of letting you play with friends online

Posted on September 29, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

FIFA 18 does offer online play on Switch. Unfortunately though, the game has a huge omission. As the game is now, you have absolutely no way of playing with friends online. The only way you can run into a friend is through random chance.

EA patching FIFA 18 to support the feature may not be entirely off the table. But as the game stands now, that is a significant feature to be lacking.

Other elements missing from the Switch version of FIFA 18 compared to its console counterparts can be found here.

geez… “EA patching FIFA 18 to support the feature may not be entirely off the table” this should not even be a question. Is like delivering the game incomplete.

Well, this is not entirely EA’s fault but Nintendo for having such a crap online system.

Except it is clearly EA’s fault and has nothing to do with Switch’s online system because other games on Switch have a friend matching system. Minecraft, is a prime example of a third-party game where you can play with your friends online another example is FastRMX (the latter being made by a much smaller team than EA Sports has), and yet another example is Dragon Ball Xenoverse. On the Nintendo side of things, Splatoon 2, MK8:D, and ARMS all let you either play with random people online and/or with your friends. If other first-party AND third-party games can implement these functions than it shows it has absolutely nothing to do with the online system and everything to do with EA.

I read the article. However, it really does not add any new information other than say that the online system is missing features that are required for being able to play with friends. Again the problem with the assertion made by the article is that there are both third-party and first-party (and I listed some of them above) that have all of these functionalities. Minecraft, FastRMX, Xenoverse, MK8:D, ARMS, and Splatoon 2 all have an invite system, the ability to play with people from your friends list online, and pretty much everything else the article claims is missing. I would totally agree with you that it is Nintendos fault if other games had similar shortcomings, but that does not appear to be case.

Look there are legitimate areas where Nintendo’s network services fall short. Voice chat, for example, is an area where they royally messed up (their implementation offers no benefits and is grossly inferior to what Sony and MS offer). Another area where they have regressed is social networking, with the discontinuation of Miiverse. In addition, adding friends using friend codes is another draconian step backwards. Thus, if developers had issues with these aspects of the system, then I would totally understand and agree that it was Nintendo’s fault. However, being able to play with friends is simply not an area where they have an issue considering so many games (both first-party and third-party) have already implemented this function.

I think the bottom line of that article is that Nintendo is the only one that doesn’t’ have a “standard” online solution like the competitors have which means that each developer has to find “a solution” for these issues.

I am glad EA have left this out. Put more pressure on Nintendo to sort out the problem and move away from the stupid phone app idea.

And once again, Nintendo fans choose to put all of the blame on EA. Because fck holding Nintendo accountable for anything anymore. It’s all “lazy” 3rd party’s and demanding fans’ fault, right? We should be thankful for what little we get because, hey, “it’s better than nothing”

I am still getting it because between this and the smartphone version of the game, this one is the superior one (I went with the Vita version of FIFA over the smartphone version up until recently). However, it is rather disheartening that EA is trying to sell this as a full price game when it is missing so many of the gameplay features of its counterparts. Mind you, not using Frostbite and bigger assets for technical reasons is not something I hold back against them, because the Switch is a portable system and not as powerful as the stationary systems (the benefit of Switch versions of these third-party games is that you can play them anywhere albeit with the trade off it having lower performance than the other version, and the main benefit for the stationary systems along with the PC platform is that you can play with better performance but with the trade off being that you cannot play the games on the go). However, technical constrains do not explain why EA decided not to create a story mode the Switch (just because they could not directly transfer the Journey mode over from the Frostbite versions does not mean that they could not have created these modes from scratch on the Switch version), or why friend matching is unavailable (particularly since other third-party games like Minecraft, and many of Nintendo’s own games already offer these options). If they did not want to invest in the Switch version and make the missing modes available, then they should have lowered the price.

I’m sorry what!? Just as I thought it couldn’t get worse. And they expect this to sell!? I’m honestly laughing at this point. Sure, the online environment for the Switch isn’t the best- but we’ve seen online with friends implementation on many titles already from Fast RMX, Lego Worlds, Dragonbll Xenoverse, Arms and Splatoon 2 amongst others. Here’s the extra crazy thing. FIFA back on the Wii U even contained the ability to play online with your friends. Yep. Let that sink in for a bit.

    EA…

  • awng782

This is bad. EA needs to fix this.

  • Jacob Groves

No buy now. EA need fixes this.

But yeah EA will not fix it until game sells well if not then EA will quit out of Switch to supports. EA is evil. This possibly answer to Wii U’s FIFA 13 issue.

  • Wanderlei

Its like they are trying to make Switch version bad on purpose.

  • SpectralDynamite

    Why is EA so incompetent?

They’ve just assured that I won’t be buying this at all.

  • ««H3©TöR»»

Yeah, but remember: “It’s too hard for us, a billion dollar company, to program for!”
