Nintendo has responded to the June 2013 NPD report. The company confirmed that the 3DS managed to sell roughly 225,000 units in the US last month, making it the best-selling video game system for the second straight month.

Hardware sales are up by more than 40 percent year-over-year. 3DS software sales are also increasing, rising by close to 105 percent.

Nintendo’s full response can be found below.

Nintendo 3DS sold nearly 225,000 units of hardware in June and finished as the best-selling video game system in the U.S. for the second consecutive month. A strong launch for Animal Crossing: New Leaf and the continued strength of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon helped sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and software increase by more than 40 percent and nearly 105 percent, respectively, over the same time last year.

Highlights for the month include:

  • Through the first six months of 2013, Nintendo has sold nearly 3.6 million combined physical and digital units of first-party Nintendo 3DS software, an increase of more than 85 percent over the same time frame last year.
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold more than 505,000 combined physical and digital units in June. More than 20 percent of these sales were through the Nintendo eShop, the second-highest ratio behind only Fire Emblem Awakening. Nintendo’s internal trackers show that sales of the game continue to be strong in July as well, indicating that Animal Crossing: New Leaf is poised to be one of the biggest games of the summer.
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D sold more than 108,000 combined units in its second month and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon added nearly 115,000 combined units in its fourth month on the market, bringing its lifetime total to more than 750,000 combined units.
  • Nintendo had three of the top five best-selling software SKUs for the month.

Nintendo 3DS will build on its momentum with the successive launches of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Aug. 11), Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (Oct. 12), Mario Party for Nintendo 3DS (name not final; November) and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (November).

Starting in August and continuing through the end of the year, Wii U will launch a series of great games, including Pikmin 3 (Aug. 4), The Wonderful 101 (Sept. 15), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (October), Wii Party U (October), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (November), Super Mario 3D World (December) and Wii Fit U (December).

    And Sonic

Sounds like Nintendo needs to make an Animal Crossings New Leaf to Wii U as well as Luigis Mansion Dark Moon. Here is a thought, just like Gamecube had an extension to play Gameboy games on it maybe they could make one for Wii U.

    • TwinTails

I think they should focus on sequels to those games instead of porting the original 3DS games. That way the experience is still new like 3D World and Tropical Freeze.

      • Edward

They could make a lot more content on the wii u than the 3ds games. So in a way it could be a whole new experience with half the work already done.

I’d agree with TwinTails, I prefer an entirely new game over a ported version with some additional content any day. WiiU has too many old ports as it is, it needs original and exclusive content, and fast. But a new, big Luigis Mansion or something would be cool – in a few years, not so soon after we already had one.

best selling handheld….last selling home game console…pathetic as usual

You don’t like Nintendo yet you comment on a Nintendo site? And how long do you think it will be the “last selling home game console” before games actually start coming out for it?

      • heavenshitman1

Actually WiiU’s sales already have made a jump for it in Japan with Pikmin 3 just having released. And Pikmin 3 isn’t the highest profile title coming for the system. Think Michael is about to be eating some of his words pretty soon

It’s sold gangbusters for just 2 days, that’s a big feat for such a small franchise, and we have yet to see this in NA or EUR.

And this isn’t the only game coming by a long shot: W101, lost world, WWHD, 2014 Olympics, Wii Fit U, 3D world, Tropical Freeze. All the haters are going to eat their words.

Im fortunate enough to be a little wealthier than average but, I will own every major title it has. Add up on Miiverse if ur up for multi anytime.
I got my PC that can do the kind of gaming PS4 and XBOX ONE will mostly have

The 3DS is selling this well and it still doesn’t have a Pokemon game yet?
