[Let’s Talk] Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 reactions

Posted on January 14, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk, Switch

The Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 finally happened this week. Nintendo delivered on a number of the major points that we needed to know, with the most important two being a release date and price. Switch launches on March 3 for $300 – probably a bit earlier and slightly more expensive than some had anticipated.

Games also took center stage, with Nintendo announcing 1-2-Switch, the new IP Arms, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, and Snipperclips. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is also confirmed for launch. From third-parties, we’re getting games like new Shin Megami Tensei and Tales entries, Project Octopath Traveler from Square Enix, Sonic Mania, FAST RMX, and more.

I’ll leave this brief since I’m still running around like a headless chicken having been insanely busy with little sleep since Thursday, but we want to know how you feel about everything that was shown. How do you feel about the price? What about the games? Are you pleased or disappointed? Let us know below!

Highlights from last week’s topic: The calm before the Switch storm

The main thing I want is confirmation that both Zelda and 3D Mario will be available at launch. That guarantees an insanely successful launch. I’m also looking for a Pokemon announcement. As for predictions… I’m gonna get crazy here and say GC games will show up and Kingdom Hearts III will be shown off 🙂

Amazing 1st party games will certainly be there, so no point in going on about that…

My highest hope is that Switch does indeed support Bluetooth headsets. I use my wireless ear buds for so much and so seamlessly, like for anything on my phone and laptop gaming. I couldn’t imagine going back to wired headphones, especially when out and about. It would be exceedingly convenient to due that with Switch.

Next, I fully expect a modern OS with quick navigation, browsing, messaging, etc. No more loading up an entirely separate app just to chat message with friends. It should be as quick as Facebook. There also needs to be seamless voice chat that’s not tethered to specific games, but can hold a connection throughout most apps/games.

These quality of life features are crucial imho for Switch to be a commercial success as a definitive device for Nintendo Everything (pun intended).

I’m actually scared for what ever Monolith Soft is doing for the Nintendo Switch. Just the thought of something like Xenoblade Chronicles X running on the Wii U is absolutely ridiculous, and I can’t imagine the things that they’ll be able to pull off with the new Hardware.

I’m hoping to hear about some sort of Atlus project. Those guys are my all time favourite development studio and they’re always trying new things. I would be pleased if their new “Project Zero” game was coming to the switch as well.

I’m also hoping to see some smaller Japanese studios make a comeback on the Switch. Maybe Mist Walker is working on a game? Maybe Tri-crescendo is too? Maybe those guys that made Pandora’s Tower get a little money to do a project? Who knows, a man can dream.

One hour is actually not a lot of time if you are going to talk about a console in detail and cover games as well. I’m hoping that announcements are kept somewhat short (basically, show a trailer, move on to the next thing) and then Treehouse goes over the details the next day.

What I think we can somewhat safely assume for sure is that Mario and Zelda will be shown. I’m also expecting Sonic, Skyrim, NBA 2K, and Dragon Quest XI. Other than that, little is actually known.

As for what I want to see, I’d like to see a solid lineup of first party games. No fillers, no tech demoes. I want full-fledged games. Basically, I want to know that the console will not be collecting dust anytime soon. A New Xenoblade with a more character-driven story would be great but I don’t expect anything like this near launch.

For third parties, I want to see incoming big titles, but I’d also like to see collaborations. While many people made fun of Hyrule Warriors when it was released and unfairly called the warriors series shallow without actually having understood the point of them, many people have changed their tune when they tried Hyrule Warriors, and it became a must-buy for Wii U. In terms of value, Hyrule Warriors was worth every penny.

As such, I’d love to see various team efforts such as Koei Techmo making a Fire Emblem Warriors, or Sega making a new F-Zero, or even Square and Alpha Dreams working together on a Super Mario RPG. I’d love to see other deals like they did with Bayonetta, or even those on the smaller side like they did with Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube. Basically, get many developers on board helping them out, adding to the library.

When it comes to ports, I’m not really that into having Wii U ports, BUT, some come to mind that would work well. Mario Kart 8 had the largest track list of any Mario Kart. Having the game re-released with a full set of tracks as well as all previous tracks including the DLC would make a monstruously large game. Mario Maker as a service needs to keep going and add to the content of it. I would love the ability to play as Luigi and new course elements. Splatoon isn’t something I played much of, but with Pro support, I could pick it up, sure.

I also liked the message about players choosing how they want to play their games. I hope that they make it clear that modern controller options will always be available on all games.

I would also like to see some franchise revivals. F-Zero, Metroid, Advance Wars and many others have been neglected somewhat. What I want to see most is Golden Sun, but I don’t think it would be a realistic expectation.

I also hope that Virtual console as a service will be much-improved. That means cross buy / cross-gen. I also hope that it will have lots of the interesting additions NES classic added like save states and filters. Gamecube support seems likely considering analogue trigger son the pro controller and main Switch unit.

Not for my sake, but for the sake of my friends, I hope that Mother 3 will be there.

And of course, what I want to see most is Melee 2. I would buy a Switch for it, even if it were the only game on it.

Keep in mind, most of these “wants” are unreasonable. These are just dreams of mine. I’m just throwing things out there.

Frankly though, I expect something a lot more tame. I want Nintendo to blow me away, but the reality is that I’m sure we’ll have nice surprises, but it won’t be the crazy dream launch all desire. No one could achieve that. As consumers, we are insatiable, and while this is a good thing, it also means that there will always be room for improvement. As long as I get a console I can play with a Pro controller, I’ll be happy enough.

My big three things:

I want as many games developed by Nintendo EAD as humanly possible, preferably overseen by Miyamoto since this very well could be his last console launch. There have been eyebrowraisingly few EAD projects released in the last year and a half. I can only hope this means they have a large lineup for Switch at launch and down the road. Zelda of course, but 3D Mario, Pikmin, an Animal Crossing that links to the phone app, Splatoon port/sequel, and Mario kart are all pretty much given. I also dream of F-Zero and maybe a new IP. And maybe someday if EA and Ubisoft release their death grip on the Tetris license, I’d kill for a new Tetris developed by Nintendo. The three best versions of Tetris ever are all developed by Nintendo, and those are the only three they’ve ever developed.

Second, an extensive and comprehensive virtual console at launch or the promise of it being all there within a year. No more drip-feed of the best games years later. In fact, if one could play EarthBound, OoT, Dream Land 2, Mario 3, and Metroid Prime at launch, who needs new Switch software? Crossbuy and its whiny advocates can suck it; I’m more than willing to pay several or tens of dollars per title I already own because they’re so darned great games.

Third, humor and or skits. Nintendo has proven time and again their content can suck but their presentation can be amazing with the right script. Not expecting it from Kimishima, (about time Americans even get to see the face of the president of Nintendo, no need for laughs) but I’d be really sad if no one made even one quip. Ideally, Reggie and Bill and the NoA crew will do a skit, (speaking of which I hope the voice-over is good) but since its broadcast from Japan I think I’ll just have to be happy with a dubbed over joke from a NoJ grunt. But then there’s treehouse live, so I think I’ll get my Bill shenanigans fix from there. (And 6:30? Really? How are all the little kids supposed to watch? It’s so stupid when they schedule stuff for so early, thank gosh the main event is in the evening.)

After those, there’s a few misc longshot things, like Mother 3, a DoA5 port with Cia as a guest character, and a Smash installment with Banjo-Kazooie in it. But all 3 of those are soooooo incredibly unlikely to ever happen that I have no excitement whatsoever, they are such abstract fanboy concepts. But I am more than willing to pay for any and all of them.

So yeah, EAD games, humor, and a quality lineup of VC games. Nothing too big to ask for, I think. Here’s hoping for a prosperous era for Nintendo, civilized yet excited discussion between fans, and an awesome Thursday evening. I’ll be missing my two favorite shows for this; let’s see if our hopes and dreams come true because of it.
