[Let’s Talk] Super Mario Run launch thoughts

Posted on December 17, 2016 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk, Mobile

Mario has finally made his mobile debut. Super Mario Run launched on Thursday… though only on iOS. The Android release will follow in 2017.

Have you downloaded Super Mario Run? If so, have you purchased the full game, or do you intend to? What are your impressions? Perhaps you’re holding off on downloading it all together? Or maybe you’re waiting on the Android version?

That’s a lot of questions, though Super Mario Run is certainly deserving of them. If you do have any final thoughts on the title, be sure to share them with us in the comments!

Highlights from last week’s topic: Which games would you want to see on the GameCube Virtual Console?

Radiant Dawn
Thousand Year Door
Kirby Air Ride
Pokemon XD/Colosseum

Well, I usually don’t care much for VC, but it would be cool to see any of these games:

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Top pick for me)
Super Mario Sunshine
Luigi’s Mansion
Mario Kart Double Dash!!
Kirby Air Ride
Wario World
F-Zero GX
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (Tennis too, but I never owned it so I have no idea)
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Bomberman Generation
Sonic Heroes
Mario Party 4, 5, 6, 7…
Metroid Prime 1 and 2 (Maybe not super interested but I feel like it needs to be there for people who enjoy them)

You know, all the Nintendo stuff + more?

I’m out of ideas, there are many games; I just can’t think of them atm.

There are a lot of great SEGA games that I’d love to see on the Gamecube VC. Skies of Arcadia: Legends is a masterpiece, the Super Monkey Ball games are good fun with friends, and Billy Hatcher & the Giant Egg is a flawed-but-charming little game too. Most of the Sonic games on Gamecube are already available elsewhere, but the original Sonic Riders would be nice to have on the VC too.

As for non-SEGA games, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles would be another of my VC wishes. It’s still a beautiful game that holds up very well with an amazing soundtrack to boot. If they could alter it so that you could emulate the GBA controller functionality with something else (using a 3DS perhaps) it’d be perfect. That might be too much trouble for little reward though.

Ahh nowthen i wondered why the wii u never had gamecube vc maybe costly or difficuilt to emulate but as for switch, eternal darkness, fzero gx are two musts as far as i’m concerned!

Kyle Eerik Turner

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Time Splitter 2 & Future Perfect, Second Sight, Cubivore (I know it’s uncommon, but I loved it), Burnout 1 & 2, Metroid: Prime 1 & 2.

There’s probably a lot I’m going to forget, but. . .

– Animal Crossing

– Star Fox Assault (so fun; add some way to have multiplayer, off and/or online)

– Kirby Air Ride (same like SF:A)

– Baten Kaitos (both games~)

– F-Zero GX (gimme dat multiplayer!)

– Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (lol, I hear lackluster things, but I want to give it a shot)

– Chibi-Robo!

– Gotcha Force

– Nintendo Puzzle Collection (TTATT Give me Panel de Pon!!)

– Wave Race

– PSO (I’d like to try III, even though it’s different)

Jack Red

I might be the only one who’d like to see this, but bring all of the THQ Spongebob games that were released. (Battle for Bikini Bottom, Movie, Lights! Camera! Pants!, Creature from the Krusty Krab, and maybe even Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.)

When they launch it on Android they’ll make 10 bucks from me.

I thought it was the cheap cash-in a lot of people might have taken it for initially, but I started getting really into it the more I played, especially Toad Rally. The price for the full game is, however, way too high for what it is, and unless they plan to add more content overtime, I think it needs to go down as soon as possible.

And there’s the Facebook link glitch. Nintendo, please get that sorted out.

    • You’ve collected all the different colored special coins on every level?

      • Jay Bern

No, I haven’t. I imagine that’ll keep me occupied for a while, though. Regardless, the full game is $13.99 where I live, and I personally feel that’s too much for a mobile game.

I just finished the final special world level today that comes with getting all the special coins. I have to say… I was amazed by how addicted I became to this little game. Knowing what was at stake for Nintendo, I expected it to be good, but it was pretty much all I could think about throughout the past three days. It’s surprisingly difficult to get those black coins! It had me swearing and my thumbs were in pain, but I really could not put it down. From Paper Mario to Pokemon and Final Fantasy, I have a huge backlog of games waiting for me right now, and yet, my brain craved this one for some reason. In a way, I’m glad it’s over because I’m suppose to be studying for law school exams, but boy was it fun while it lasted (I enjoyed it more than New Super Mario Bros 2). I think it was the perfect idea for an iphone game too. It’s not as complex as traditional Mario games so as to replace them, but it differentiates itself and what it does, it does very well for $10. My one complaint would be that the final boss is a bit streamlined compared to previous games, but it didn’t detract in a big way. I really hope the added characters find their way to the inevitable 2.5D Super Mario Bros. for Switch.

I hate mobile games but I love Mario Run.

I understand why a lot of mobile gamers are complaining about it – because it’s not like other mobile games.

  • Vigilante_blade

I will not purchase it. I am not too fond of mobile games in general.

    • Did you at least download it and try the demo? Did you like NSMBU?

      • Vigilante_blade

Hmm… I haven’t purchased it, but I know that I simply don’t like touch-only games from experience. I’d rather not put myself through another addictive, but not fun experience.

I was ok with NSMBU. I kind of wish they switched up the art style and improved the physics however. I enjoyed New Super Luigi U much more than New Super Mario Bros U. For its shorter, sweeter levels with higher difficulty.

        • You might not like it, which of course is totally fine, but you might want to try it. Try and get all the black coins in the three free demo levels and do a few Toad Rallies. I feel the same as you about NSMBU and Luigi U – and Mario Run reminds me of the things I like about those games.

If you don’t want to try it that’s cool. I’ll meet you in the leader boards of another game sometime!

          • Vigilante_blade

With all due respect, I am not even willing to give it a shot. That is how confident I am that I would not like it. I dislike the concept of button-less gameplay as a whole.

Plus, given the choice between a using a portable and a mobile device, I will always use a portable.

          • jimmy

Come on, try it, everyone is doing it, just one little hit, your first time will be free, lol

          • Vigilante_blade

            I keep a pretty tame life. I don,t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t do other drugs, and I don’t do mobile games.

          • lol!

  • ShadowDragoon

I am not interested in mobile games, not even Nintendo ones, that’s all.

  • Annie

Tried it and I wasn’t expecting it to be that fun and addictive, definitely buying it when it comes to Android

    P.S. watch this:

  • MagcargoMan

Not interested. Just a watered-down 2D Mario (and based on the NSMB series at that). Don’t have a smartphone anyway.

That said, it was cool how they added characters who aren’t playable in the NSMB games. Shame that we get Toad and Toadette here, but in the actual games we get two random Blue and Yellow Toads instead.
