NBA 2K18 dev wanted the Switch version to be the same as PS4/Xbox One from day one, dedicated second team

All indications thus far point to NBA 2K18 being very solid on Switch. Aside from some graphical differences, the Switch version matches up well to its counterparts on other platforms.

In an interview with Gamereactor, senior producer Rob Jones discussed the approach to creating NBA 2K18 for Switch in a bit more detail. From day one, Visual Concept’s president spoke about making it “the same exact game that was on PS4 and Xbox One”. It goes without saying that doing so was no easy task.

Jones’ full words:

“Well the main thing that our president said from day one is that the Switch had to be the same exact game that was on PS4 and Xbox One, so by starting there, you know, the bar was already set extremely high, because we were already working really, really hard just to get it on platforms we already knew, and then suddenly to take that and miniaturise it for the portable, you know, the portable Switch (obviously it also plays when it’s docked), but to get all those features working on there was kind of a gargantuan task.”

“We actually had a second team just dedicated only to doing the Switch version just because it would have been impossible within the confines of VC […] So obviously we delivered a good experience. It’s not the same exact graphics because the Switch can’t push them, you know, but the experience itself – you’re not missing out on anything from the Switch version [compared] to the main consoles version.”

If i liked basketbal, i would have bought it day-one for the Switch just to support them. I hope the Switch version does okay and we can see other games from them as well

  • Kalmaro

It’s reassuring knowing that they are putting so much effort into making this game feel like a comparable experience to the others. I’m more interested in getting it now but I’ll wait a bit first.

  • Captain N

Every third party should approach Nintendo development this way !!

    • TDude73

(as Pit): It sure is, Kevinicus!

      • Captain N

        Lol

  • Advance*

I respect that but I just wish the physical version was coming out right away. I don’t know if this is the game I want taking up 1/5th of my extra storage.

    • Gemmol Lewis

I have 90 gigs left plus i wanted it digital so i have to put it

  • hi v3.0

That’s great, unlike the soccer game

    • Spice’71

Do you mean Fifa? I think even those guys made a decent effort, more than I was expecting from EA actually – 60fps 1080 docked and 60fps 720 portable.
That just leaves Activision, let’s see how much of an effort they put in on their big entry to the Switch library.

      • Saiyaken才野犬(Sai とうまる)

EA has a much bigger pocket to make a full featured game. Yet they don’t. And blame the Switch for it.
They get no sympathy from me.

  • Luka Malafaia

This is the way to go.

  • StuOhQ

Do we know how much of the physical version will make it onto the cart? I’m hoping the slowdown on release means they’re putting the game on a 32GB cart and leaving only a few GBs to be downloaded onto the console.

    • John Adney

they’re using an 8gb cart. you need 16.1gb on your sd card for additional data download, and 5gb on your system memory for the save file.
meanwhile super mario odyssey is roughly 5gb in its entirety.

  • Blanco8x8

I give them points for actually trying, but I still believe they could do better.

    • Indielink

Not sure what more you expect here. Literally they fit the entire game into something that’s maybe (at best) 2/3 the power of the Xbox 1.

      • Bảo Anh Hoàng

Switch is 196 Gflops handheld and 393 Gflops docked, Xbox 1 is 1,3 Tflops = 1300 Gflops, even with Tegra chip and faster CPU, switch power = little over 1/3 Xbox 1 at best, not 2/3

        • Indielink

You can’t simply compare straight flops and pull your answer from that. The Switch also has far more modern architecture and being dedigned by Nvidia makes ot far easier to work with.

Either way, my point to Blanco still stands.

          • Bảo Anh Hoàng

Doesn’t change the fact Xbox 1 is 3 times stronger than switch and it used 60 gb bluray disk which is way cheaper than 32 gb switch cartridge at the moment

  • Vigilante_blade

That is all we ask of third parties. We know the hardware is limited in power, but we want feature full games.

    • TDude73

You asked for it, Blade… and NBA 2K18 is living proof. You don’t have to take my word for it though. #Respect

  • Jacob Groves

That brilliant. DAY ONE BUY for Switch!!! 😀

  • yyxkk

Bravo! Thank you 2K! But as a soccer fan, I have to support FIFA this time so hopefully EA would bring the Frostbite version to switch next year.

    • TDude73

Nothing but respect when it comes to sports titles on the Nintendo Switch.

  • Dayph

That’s the spirit. 2K Games, you are my new favorite developer company.

  • JasonBall

If only everyone would do this. Turns out the Switch is easy to develop for for everyone except the people that matter, the big third parties.

  • Jason Baksa

Now 2k needs to bring back hockey for the switch. And maybe somehow do a college football game.

    • TDude73

If Take Two ever brings College Football back, they need to bring back two legendary commentators Terry McGovern & Jay Styne as Dan Stevens & Peter O’Keefe.

  • Roto Prime

anyone know the size of the cartridge of this game?

    • What sup Roto?

      • Roto Prime

lol nothing, you getting NBA 2K18 for the Nintendo Switch Khaaaaan?!!!

        • Cool! Maybe the game seems cool!

          • Roto Prime

I want the game but want to know if take2 is using a 32GB game card or not, if they went cheap, so will I…I really want to play it!!

          • Seems cartridge are really expensive and using costumers pay half of it, Nintendo need address this issue make more affordable cartridges for devs, I don’t mind cause I have 256 GB ($129) but kinda annoying for some people can’t afford it, Switch isn’t cheap console if you thinking about it.

          • Roto Prime

Could not have word it better myself!! <3 Nintendo needs to make both Nintendo Switch owners and 3rd party happy, they should eat that big Cartridge cost.

          • Lol thanks bud! Exactl Nintendo need fix this issues asap, and hope see you caht around in my server I will do a giveway today Metroid hope you sign up 🙂

          • Roto Prime

            Thanks Khaaaaan!!! will do!!

          • Great hope you can win!

  • Mark

I’m kind of surprised at the comments here. To me, it’s really discouraging that the effort needed to get a Switch version of a PS4/XB1 game was so intensive that they needed to put an extra team on it. That says “expensive” to me, and unless they really get a return on that investment, I don’t see it happening many times in the future.

I hope that the Switch attach rate is far higher than the PS4/XB1 games. That at least would demonstrate that the effort is worth it to cater to this audience. Fingers crossed.

    • Michael C

But we know the attach rate will not be, and no 3rd party game has really sold well on switch, the only games that get and stay on charts are of course nintendo 1st party games.

      • Bảo Anh Hoàng

Lego City Undercover on Switch outsold both PS4/Xbox 1 ver

    • SteveW

NBA 2k sells all year for 2k. 2k17 is still charting on the top 10 game sales every month. I have a good feeling they will make a great profit on the Switch version. And don’t forget 2k does crappy pay to win micro transactions so they make money hand over fist by that alone. Now that they have the base built for the Switch version it will probably be easier for them going forward for 2k19. At least I hope so.

  • Indielink

Day one physical. Not even a basketball fan but gotta show some love.

  • masterjedi

These are the types of efforts that Nintendo fans deserve. If the game sells terribly then 2K has every reason to temper their support. But companies cannot continue to put out a lackluster product and expect consumers to buy it. The expectations need to be realistic though. If the game doesn’t sell 2 million copies on Switch that can’t be considered a failure. 500k should be considered a success.

  • cloud36426

Basketball games are OK. I may just pick it up to play with the children. Companies that put in the work deserve to be supported. My boys love basketball.

    • Denzo

My boy is still too young to play.. I might have to buy it for him on switch anyway. It’s the only reason I might buy 2k., is the switch factor.. I swore after having every 2k since 2000.. I wouldn’t buy another after nba 2k16. They are the same God damn game every year! Even the commentating is 95% the same every year. Their costs must be so low. Given the assets have been identical.

And please lose the concrete basketball shoes game play. It’s like your underwater. And on roller skates.

  • flyinb11

I’m sure the textures are lower quality as well. Probably won’t be visible on the handheld mode, but off screen.

  • Shonenfan

Great job 2k! Its great news for fans ,you know. Im gonna give this game a shot since they really dedicated to make the switch version , you know? Can’t say the same about fifa , you know.

In all seriousness gonna buy this game. Full console basketball game on the go!

  • Michael C

Exact same game…..without the graphics…or the frame rate…. This type of marketing, may as well release it on the ps3/xb360 …

    • Bảo Anh Hoàng

But you can play it anywhere, that’s different

  • manry

“It’s not the same exact graphics because the Switch can’t push them, you know,”

No we dont know. More like YOU can’t push that graphics for laziness. Doom is coming and is a fuking monster graphically so pls stfu EA.
