SEGA reveals Valkyria Chronicles 4, coming to Switch

Update: First screenshot, art, and gameplay details added below.

Original: Valkyria Chronicles 4 is in development and is coming to Switch, SEGA has revealed. The game is launching on Nintendo’s console in Japan in Spring 2018, with the overseas release taking place sometime next year as well.

We have the announcement trailer below:

And here’s the general premise, along with gameplay details:

The continent of Europa is engulfed in the flames of the Second Europan War between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance. Although the Federation struggles valiantly against the Empire’s forces, the relentless imperial military machine threatens to consume them. With victory slipping away, the Federation executes Operation Northern Cross: a last-ditch attempt to capture the imperial capital and end the war.

Commander Claude Wallace and his loyal childhood friends in Squad E are sent to fight for the desperate operation’s success, but they will have to endure harsh bone-chilling elements, waves of imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria… and unravel a grave truth that will shake them to the core.

The first entry in the Valkyria Chronicles series launched almost a decade ago. It’s primarily a tactical role-playing franchise, though the latest entry was more action-focused. The video above only focuses on the story and doesn’t show any gameplay, but we assume that SEGA will be returning to those tactical RPG roots with Valkyria Chronicles 4.

Gameplay details / features

A Coming-of-Age Story in a Time of War – Valkyria Chronicles 4 takes place in the same timeframe as the original Valkyria Chronicles, but focuses on a whole new cast of main characters. Players will take command of the eager, young Commander Claude Wallace, engineer/heavy weapons extraordinaire Riley Miller, hotheaded Darcsen Raz, ice-cold ace sniper Kai Schulen, and more. Together, they will experience the painful realities of war–but will the bonds of Squad E’s friendships survive the frozen battlefield?

The Next Generation “BLiTZ” Battle System – The part overhead turn-based strategy, part RPG, and part real-time 3rd person shooter “BLiTZ” battle system returns to the field. New features include an explosive new class called the Grenadier, numerous offensive/defensive battleship support options, chances for a unit to have a “Last Stand” action before death, and more. Plus, fight the imperial threat with more units on larger-scale maps than ever before.

CANVAS Aesthetics – The series’ signature hand-drawn visual style is back and overhauled for the newest generation. Inspired by watercolor compositions, the CANVAS Graphics Engine blends visual elements of reality and imagination to create an expressive world filled with colorful emotions. Watch the journey of Squad E unfold like an interactive painting!

The Return of a Legendary Composer – The illustrious Hitoshi Sakimoto, original composer of the Valkyria Chronicles series and countless other emotional epics, returns to provide a sweeping orchestral soundtrack for the game.

  • theFooFighter

    I came

    • So did I lol

      • Ardisan

I came here a few minutes ago. This is exciting new!

  • Blackbishop

That’s good! It would be cool if Sega made a VC compilation for Switch owners, but that would be too much I guess.

  • Bart

    This news is great news.

    Day 1.

  • “This looks too anime-like” said by no JRPG fan ever hahaha.
The Switch is slowly becoming the next big JRPG machine :D.

And look at that, releasing alongside Xbox One and Playstation 4. That’s something we don’t see quite often. Hyped!

    • Dascylus

I think it’ll eventually lean towards the Switch being the go-to JRPG machine, especially since all of the Vita devs and swarming to get software onto the system.

      • GoldenTriforce

Xbox One is for western sales, like what SE did for FFXV.

        • MajoraMan28

Except the M$ crowd isn’t even into JRPGs to begin with, hence their extremely lackluster sales on the XBONE platform with FFXV.

          • gurbeergill

XB fanboys are generally the ‘anti-weeb’ crowd.

    • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

So its becoming the VITA, but successful

    • gurbeergill

“”This looks too anime-like” said by no JRPG fan ever”

Hahaha, hell no. Man I lovz me some big eyes, funny-colored hair, and funky, imaginative costumes.
Call me a weeb if you want!

  • Umegames Official

SWEET! but i really need to play VC3…figure it out sega please.

    • Blackbishop

At this point, I think it is possible that they could port VC2 and VC3 to Switch. And I hope this really happens.

  • GoldenTriforce

SEGA is supporting the Switch with every non-exclusive game they have,

    Also more JRPGs yay!

  • Amethyst Gaze

This is awesome news. So far, VC4, FE Switch, Octopath all slated for 2018. Very likely DQXI too, I’d say. Pretty excited.

  • Locky Mavo

Now this is more like it! This is the kind of stuff I want to see from SEGA.

    • Zeebor

They seem to be treating Atlus like Activision treats Blizzard: a separate company for weirdies. Not to say Atlus games are bad, but they cater to a specific demo and Sega is keeping that brand image separate. For now. When Konami bought Hudson, the bee stayed until the end of the Wii age before being fully assimilated.

What you need to worry about is when they do just start saying “Sega presents: Persona Puzzle Quest” that’s when you need to start worrying about the Sammy part of Sega Sammy.

  • nekoknight

Well that was pleasantly unexpected! But I’ve never played a Valkyria Chronicles game before though, are they any good?

    • Yes they are.

    • KnightWonder

If you remember Code Name STEAM on the 3DS, it’s basically like that.

      • Zeebor

But with less Illustrated Classics and Cthulu, and more Impressionist landscapes and Nazis.

    • theFooFighter

      Hell yeah

    • Aiddon

They’re strategy RPGs, except the characters are played 3rd Person Shooter style to the point where you have to manually aim, kind of like Code Name: STEAM.

      • Aline Piroutek

Time to play Codename Steam I guess.

    • キロ

Good is a matter of taste. i enjoyed it, and would say it was fun/good, but obviously it may vary, so… xD

  • VALKYRIA CHRONICLES 4 IS COMING TO THE SWITCH…..WOW……in my Bayonetta voice…..” Pardon me while I kiss the sky “

  • Gamingfan

Will be picking this game up.

    • Oh so you’re back a Nintendo fan now?

      • Gamingfan

Im getting it on the ps4. I like nintendo. Just don’t like the switch.

        • Robert Hastings

Then why are you here? Why not go onto site something like Dualshockers or another gaming news website rather than going onto a Nintendo news website if you don’t like the Switch.

          • Gamingfan

            because I follow nintendo news.

          • Robert Hastings

And why do follow Nintendo news, if don’t own any of there current system, or don’t plan on owning the Switch unless they make a dedicated dock version of the Switch?

          • Gamingfan

because I like to see whats going on with them.

          • Robert Hastings

Now let me ask you this, why do constantly bring up the fact you are waiting for a docked only version of the Switch? We already know you want it a docked only version of the Switch, and every time you bring it up it’s starts a war between you and three other people, making this comments section longer than it’s supposed to be.

          • Gamingfan

pretty sure i didnt mention the switch in my og post.

          • Robert Hastings

I’m not talking about this post. I’m talking about the multitude of times you left a comment saying your waiting for a docked only version of the Switch.

          • Gamingfan

I havent spoken about that topic for over a week.

    • Ninty Kad

How good are the Valkyria game? Asking as someone who hasn’t play any of them

      • Gamingfan

no idea. haven’t played any of them either.

      • Blackbishop

I have only played VC1(because the other VC games were for PSP), but it is good. It is on STEAM, PS3 and PS4 and it should be cheaper at this point, so you can buy it if you want to know how it would be VC4.

  • Roto Prime
  • James Fox

I would predict that Valkyria Chronicles 4 will sell more on the Switch then on PS4 and Xbone

Why? Simple – The PS and Xbox camps hate japanese games
Why else would the Valkyria Chronicles series sell horribly on the PSP?

    • Blackbishop

I’ll buy both versions (Swtich and PS4). And if there is a VC1 for Switch I’ll buy it as well.

Who knows? perhaps they will port the PSP titles to Switch too.

    • Tlink7

Yeah, it is well-documented PS fans hate games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts lol

    • Petri

PSP sold well, but because it was super easy to pirate PSP games, the games did not sell that good.

      • Aline Piroutek

Just like Dissidia. Pirated 5 million copies. Sold less than a million.

  • Zeebor

It is now Winter-Time for Hitler.

  • theFooFighter

    Jesus Christ not gamingfan

  • Aiddon

And then Sony’s butt clenched again.

    • Tlink7

You realise the game is also coming out on the PS4? 😛

      • Aline Piroutek

        *non-exclusive crappy deal

        • Tlink7

So when Nintendo gets an exclusive, it is fine, but when Sony does it is the work of the devil? They’re nasty no matter what company makes it so… stop trying to start console wars

          • Aline Piroutek

Nope, Nintendo exclusive third party titles aren’t fine.
Exclusivity on third party titles are bad to the customer in every single platform.

          • Aline Piroutek

Especially nowadays when the porting work is way easier than before.

          • Tlink7

Well, sorry for assuming you were one of the crazies <3

      • Aiddon

And also on the Switch, which is taking valuable exclusivity away from them, especially in Japan.

        • Tlink7

VC4 isn’t the first game to be multiplat, Sony will be fine

  • Snackster1001

This confirms to me that SEGA is fully onboard with switch support. Just goes to show that certain third parties only make poor sales because their support is poor *cough E A *cough

  • Don Zaloog

Another great JRPG to add to the “must buy” list. Keep ’em coming, Japanese devs. Now where is Battle Chasers?

    • dathip

Nov 28, a simple google search

      • Don Zaloog

Can you provide the link that says this? Because the ones I see are old articles talking about the delay or have the release date as October 3rd.

    • Aline Piroutek

I’m waiting for the new Virtual On game on 2018. Playstation exclusive (at least the Vita still alive for third party)

  • I dig the designs! Woohoo for Kazuya Nakai and Maaya Sakamoto! Yeeeees!

    • DiscoGentleman

Maaya Sakamoto has one of the purest voices in this world.

  • DHInc

    Awesome news! Love this series.

  • Padre

Only played the first game, but it was really good. Day 1 for me.

  • キロ

Yay! The first game is one of my favorites, so there is something to look forward to. in March : )

Wonder if it will have mechanics from 2/3 though, or be more like the first.

  • ben

They should probably cancel the PS4 version and just concentrate on making a good switch game.

    • theFooFighter

Why? Smaller Japanese series like this have needed to go multiplat for ever. If anything needs to be dropped they should swap out Xbox for PC. Also the series started on PS3. It would be kinda f**ked up if the original and biggest fanbase got screwed over. Sega isn’t Capcom

      • ben

It was sarcasm. But really.. The Ps4 will be done by this time next year. So Japanese devs may as well move all their stuff to switch at this point.

        • Aline Piroutek

It is quite cheap to port games between XONE PS4 and Switch if they aren’t on a exclusive engine.
That’s why XONE ports for Japan are still being done. And why PS4 will still get Switch games.

  • Vinicius

The first one was the reason I bought a PS3, really lookng forward to this one.

  • dathip

Going to see if a PC version is confirmed and a simultaneous release date amongst the console versions. If not, I will get the switch versions.

  • Blanco8x8

I never played the series, but I know this is a very big deal! I bet the fans are hyped.

  • Petri

I hope they port the first one as well, loved that game.

  • Jorge Tavani

    More for SFM

    • Aline Piroutek

      Street Fighter Meleeeeeee

  • Princess_Eevee9

Now announce a collection of the first 3 titles! Exciting news for next year!

  • R.Z.

    Oh no !
Another series that I could safely ignore until now because it never showed up on Nintendo consoles and that I have to pay attention to now.
I hate it when Nintendo is succesful, all these choices to make …
    😛
