Star Wars Battlefront II dev says Switch release isn’t currently planned, could be explored “if we see opportunities there”

Posted on October 19, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

GameSpot recently spoke with Motive Studios producer David Robillard about Star Wars Battlefront II. The site managed to get in a question about a potential Switch version.

Robillard said that a Switch release could be explored “if we see opportunities there”. However, he quickly added that “it is not something that’s on the books right now.”

It’s worth noting that Star Wars Battlefront II runs on Frostbite. For FIFA 18 on Switch, rather than using the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions as a base which also use Frostbite, EA created a custom engine. It would be interesting to see how Star Wars Battlefront II or any other titles from the publisher would be handled in the future if they’re developed with that engine.

EA in Panic mode since the switch outsold the PS4 in Destiny 2 month.
Also preorders for Battlefront 2 have been pretty light.

    • JoyConBoyz

No need to preorder when there will be plenty of copies.

      • Froot

Preorders aren’t for “I think I won’t have a copy”. It’s just to have it for sure day one with maybe some extras, maybe with pre-load,etc

  • StrawhatEevee

Lol EA. I’d be down if they released an actual version and not one with none of the modes from the other two consoles. Love me some Battlefront.

  • CaptainPleb

They couldn’t Fifa to run well enough on Switch with Frostbite, how the hell do they expect to get Battlefront to work?

    • Fredy Rodriguez Ortega

they did not even try with frostbite, they did not optimize it. Frostbyte does not support it so it has to be updated to use NS specific hardware

      • CaptainPleb

Either way, this game would have to be heavily downgraded to perform at 30fps on Switch.

    • Simtopia23

As you can read in the article he says that he would like to try to make Battlefront II with the custom engine used for Fifa 18.

  • Blanco8x8

Typical sh!tty response from an EA developer.

  • Pariksit

don’t bring that microtransaction/lootbox fest over here

    • DiscoGentleman

Exactly. And anyone on the other consoles and PC shouldn’t buy it either

    • CaptainPleb

I never understood why Nintendo fans are so snobbish when it comes to certain 3rd party games coming to our systems. You’d think they’d want as many games as possible to release on the new console.

      • Honestly, I saw this title (of the article), and wondered who asked for this? I thought people on other consoles were mad at this game? My friend is ridiculously into SW, but she doesn’t sound pleased with this game. Isn’t the first one way better, or something?

Third party games are nice, but some of them aren’t exactly worth it.

        • Teclis

Thing with this game, is that it’s straight up, objectively, pay-to-win. It’s better than the first in every respect, or so I’ve heard, but that doesn’t really give a vote of confidence when loot-boxes literally give you top-tier items that grant things like 100% damage reduction when using certain abilities, compared to the low tier 50%. Half damage or god mode? Pay some money!

      • Mark

These randomized microtransactions are a trend that I don’t want to see supported in the future. While I was excited for SWBF2 earlier, I’m not picking it up on any system. The Star Wars name isn’t good enough for me to pay for something like that.

        • CaptainPleb

Fair enough, to each his own. I had a blast with the beta and I think I’ll get enough fun out of it without spending extra money on crates.

I prefer this model over a season pass that splits the player base.

Have you just crawled from under a rock? This game is made by EA games, the company who wins Worst Company in America every single year repeatedly, beating out Haliburton, Facebook, and all sorts of egregious corporations.

        • CaptainPleb

So what? A game is just a game, even if you hate the company it’ll still bring people to the platform, it’s freaking Star Wars.

          • Radish

“So what if I’m being taken advantage of?! It’s Star Wars!!!11” Spoken like a true corporate sheep. xD

          • CaptainPleb

You take video games way too seriously lol

          • Radish

Good to know you will pay anything as long as a Star Wars sticker is slapped on it. Lmao

          • CaptainPleb

I’ll buy 5 lootboxes in your honor 🙂

    • hey what is a loot box

      • video game gambling

        • i’ve seen those crappy video poker machines at bars
          always seemed like a scam
they wouldn’t have em there if they didn’t make money

  • Jeff Moreira

    Never going to happen. Simple.
Any other developer I could say that there is a chance but with EA it’s no way.

    • what if it was microsoft

      • Tetroy64

Well Microsoft did bring Minecraft to the switch sooooooo

        • awesomeparadise3

Heck, even Sony with their Unties label will publish games on the Switch.

      • Jeff Moreira

My point was that EA is not a great supporter of Nintendo so I think it is very hard to believe that they would port it and if they do it will be too late. People will have lost interest in the game.

  • nemo37

While it is extremely unlikely (Frostbite would most likely not run satisfactorily on Switch and perhaps EA might see it as too big of a risk, particularly after what happened with FIFA and also considering the installable is still small), I would love to have this game on Switch. This along with Need for Speed, Plants VS. Zombies, and especially the Sims would be amazing, although again is is extremely unlikely, unfortunately.

    • Platano Cebolla

EA took down the creators responsible for creating the game.

  • Snackster1001

Even though I despise EA’s practices, I would like to play star wars battlefront on the go… a discount…..without buying any of the micro transactions.

  • Bruno_Ostara

We need those loot boxes, EA

  • Pepperkeet

You can keep your garbage microtransaction game ea.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Nah, that’s alright. They can keep it

  • MrGuyGaming

“if we see opportunities there”? The Switch is selling amazingly, and Battlefront 2 runs on Frostbite (as does FIFA 18). WTCrap is EA waiting for?

    • Platano Cebolla

They want to see that it will give them money.

  • Jacob Groves

…… EA….. You again…… Crap talks……. Many gamers hate you EA for many reasons in history and continue in this generation and generation 9 (Switch).

  • AquaBat

“If we see opportunities there” is code for “If we can determine that Switch owners will fall for our microtransaction garbage”

  • Locky Mavo

    *sarcastic slow clap*
Well done Disney, you’ve done so well in ruining one of my favourite franchises, in all its biggest forms, be it movies, TV shows and video games, especially the deal with EA, it just takes it so much further down, so well done Disney.

  • Justin McQuillen

The fact that these people think I want to play their garbage-tier shovelware is insulting. I don’t want to. Ever.

  • JJ

    DO IT!
