anyone knows what is the criteria for this award?

    • Gestrid

From the video, I’m guessing it’s fan voting.

      • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

        yeah… i saw that too… but look:
Critics’ Choice Award – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

What critics? from where? how many?
I can’t find their official website to understand the criteria..

    • Spice’71

      British press and gamer’s

      • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

        thank you.
Do you know which media outlets? Like, IGN UK, etc? I can’t find a list

        • Spice’71

Voter’s had to register via publications such as ‘Edge magazine’, PC gamer etc.
It’s basically gamers that voted but categories are sponsored by Daily newspapers

          • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

            interesting, thanks for clarifying! =D

Ultimate Game of the Year? What does that even mean if BotW is already Game of the year?

    • AJK

It means out of all the other categories the ‘ultimate’ winner.

    • Dascylus

They have an Ultimate GotY because they also have console specific GotY categories, so this is basically over all platforms it is the best game.

    • Dumdum

They have a Critic’s GotY, so I assume they take that, as well as fan voting, then use whatever equation they have for that and then come up with the Ultimate GotY that encompasses both critics’ and players’ choices.

  • Mark

My worries were that Nintendo wouldn’t win much in pure fan voting, due to the Switch being so new. Glad that I was mistaken.

I know that Cuphead is a fantastic game, but it makes me a little sad for Microsoft that their best game is a niche $19.99 indie game made by two people. Hope they have a better 2018.

    • Radish

I agree. It is sad that the world’s most powerful console is wasted on an indie title with 1930s graphics. And it’s not even exclusive when anyone can buy it on Steam. Cuphead is great, but it doesn’t convince me to get an Xbox One X. Were they that embarrassed with Forza 7 and Super Lucky’s Tale that they chose a multi-platform game to be best Microsoft game?

    • AJK

We gamers need all 3 consoles to be strong, as competition makes companies try harder. When a company rises to the top they become complacent. Like Nintendo were with Wiiu after the success of the Wii, and how sony are starting to be now with the success of the ps4.

    • Dumdum

They don’t have much in the way of console exclusives, is why. The ones they do, they weren’t able to launch in the past year.

I wouldn’t fret too much about them. They still have a bevy of multiplatform games, and they will always have the Minecraft cash cow, so they won’t be in any dire financial straits any time soon.

  • Spice’71

These awards are voted for by the British press and British gamers, so considering Nintendo is 3rd in a 3 horse race they did pretty.good !!

  • Zelda deserved it all. Especially best audio. Only game I can just stand around in and listen to. I don’t see how Horizon won storytelling. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t above average either. And I found Aloy to be the vocally most annoying character of the year so I don’t agree with Ashly winning for that role

    • Mark

More vocally annoying than Yunobo in Breath of the Wild?

“Oh maan, oh maan, oh maaan… what am I gonna dooo?

  • I hope Cuphead will win! the game is amazing.

  • Dumdum

Happy to see Sid Meier get a lifetime achievement award. Dude deserves it.

    • Spice’71

What about his brother Oscar ?

  • Reggie

I’m pleased with this and with Cuphead winning visual design. It definitely deserved it.

    • Sam

is it you.. reggie fills anime…

      • Reggie

Egad I’ve been found out. Time to pack my bags.

  • MajoraMan28

I’m not sure Mario launching earlier would’ve changed the result
People are still hyping Zelda to this day.
I have a tendency to prefer Mario, ironically, but BotW was revolutionary and daring for the series itself and for the open-world genre. Also, while it has its issues, Odyssey has a few things that made it fall short to become the best in the series. The vocal music at the end was cringe, the Broodals were underwhelming (except the epic Mecha Broodal fight), some levels were shorter than I was hoping for (Ruined Kingdom was unforgettable.), and the Luncheon Kingdom was, imo, the least exciting of the bunch (its tracks being subpar).
Zelda even had the better OST, imho. I wish Odyssey dared more with its tracks and returned to the epic style of the Galaxy games. I miss the choral that gave Bowser a more threatening vibe. :/
