[Let’s Talk] What are you playing? – July 2016

Posted on July 3, 2016 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk

A new month is here! We’ve just entered July, so that means we want to know what you’ve been playing. Have you started up something entirely new for the month? Or maybe you’re continuing something you started a little while back? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments below!

Highlights from last week’s topic: Zelda: Breath of the Wild reaction and Nintendo’s E3

i think the main reason i’m in love with BotW is the fact that the game becomes playable in less than 4 minutes, while also starting with something that ACTUALLY gets you interested in the plot/setting.

i’ve really hated how the last two 3D zeldas started with 3+ hours of uninteresting story/tutorials with little to no gameplay, so i’m glad to see that’s gone since it was my biggest worry before seeing the reveal.

If I may, Breath of the Wild looks sick. I don’t think I’ve been this excited for a new upcoming Zelda title since A Link to the Past, and that was ages ago. Everything about the game, from the way you can go anywhere and climb anything (and jump) to get around, to the idea that puzzles can be solved in multiple ways, to ESPECIALLY the return of the Zelda 1 philosophy of “This is the world. Go.” I’m just in love. While I have no qualms with the typical Zelda formula, it’s nice to see the series go in a very unconventional new direction. Without trying to start something here, I am one of those people who would have liked to see a character creation or gender option appear in the game. It’s a small disappointment that they didn’t, but whatever. I still believe it’s not totally implausible someday, and the game still looks straight up amazing either way.

As for the rest of Nintendo’s presentation:
– Pokemon Sun and Moon was exactly what I expected it to be, and I’m 110% okay with this. Little touches like being able to see how many times stats have been lowered/raised are extremely welcome additions that I’m surprised have taken until now to happen. Also, character customization is back! And thank god, because I really can’t stand the trainer girl’s “chicken hat”. XD

– Pokemon Go, however, I cannot begin to care less about. I just don’t get it. It looks boring as snot to me. Maybe I’m just bitter because my phone can’t even run Miitomo, so I KNOW I won’t be able to play this. But still, I haven’t seen any compelling reason for this woo me yet.

– Dragon Quest 7, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and now Ever Oasis! So much RPG love! 😀

– The new Rosalina Amiibo (also the Boo) will be mine! And I’ll probably get at least one of the new Breath of the Wild series ones, but I’d rather wait and see what they do first. I don’t think I want the Guardian though because I have no idea where I’d put it. But… where’re the Cloud and Corrin Amiibo?

– The format they used to present the games was okay, I guess, but it’s not really my thing. I really just want to watch the trailers. I don’t mind if the Treehouse does their thing afterward (where I can tune in when I want for the games I want to see), but I really do prefer the Directs. They’re just more… well, direct.

If I’m to look at just the show, it wasn’t much in terms of surprises. I was glad to see there were a few unannounced things like Grezzo’s new game. Unfortunately though, Paper Mario Color Splash just reinforced my disdain for the game. I did not enjoy Sticker Stars, and I can reasonably infer that this won’t be my style. The reasoning that there is already a Mario RPG series with Mario & Luigi is a very faulty explanation to me. The two game splay very differently and I loved both series for different reasons.

I do want Monster Hunter Generations, but I already knew it was coming, so it’s no surprise to me. I’m curious as to why Metroid: Federation Force was not shown. I’d assume that showing it back to back with paper Mario Color Splash might have cause too much of a backlash.

When it comes to Zelda, I’m quite happy with what I have seen. Aonuma quickly dispelled my only major worry by confirming Pro controller support. I love everything he has been saying lately, and he seems like he understands a lot of the Wii U’s shortcomings. The GPS comparison was very apt, and taking fan feedback while making this game was not something I’d expect from a Nintendo employee. Nevertheless, I find his openness very refreshing and I have a lot of newfound respect for this man today. I’m not a big Open World fan, but if someone can make me like an open world game, it’s Monolith. Combat seems very fun and varied, and the game looks great for a Wii U game. I’d rather wait and see how good the NX version will look like, but I’m happy with what I have seen.

When it comes to amiibo, I’m happy to get Daisy, my main in Mario crossover games, and Wario with the classic clothing. I also think the use of the Wolf Link amiibo is fairly smart. It’s certainly something that’s just fun to add to the game, but not essential. I kind of wish player two could use Wolf Link, but this made me replay Twilight Princess because I want Wolf Link ready for this game.

Edit: Pokémon Sun and Moon interests me, but the new modes, not really. I’m just glad to see customization options back, and I like how information is more readily available.

Pokémon GO… I don’t want to see mobile games at E3 personally. I was bored out of my mind.

Edit: I still want Nintendo to have conferences.

I was legitimately blown away by the gameplay reveal of the new Zelda. I had been trying to keep my expectations down given the protracted development it has had and how much i was turned off by the last attempt at making a Zelda with a big overworld (Twilight Princess). Nintendo seem to have taken the best elements of the Zelda series and fused them with a true open world, and also added some extra Nintendo magic to actually refresh the concept of freedom in an open world. Next march cannot come soon enough.
