Level-5 boss teases “next work” for Yo-kai Watch, 10th anniversary site open
Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino has teased the future of Yo-kai Watch. Writing on Twitter today, he said that “the next work that builds on the flow of Yo-Kai Watch is steadily progressing. The announcement is still a little ahead, but please look forward to it!”
This follows another tease from earlier in the year. Hino noted at the time that “the next amazing thing” for Yo-kai Watch was in development.
It was only a few years ago that Yo-kai Watch was once one of the most popular gaming franchises – at least in Japan. Although it struggled to gain a foothold in the west, the initial games were some of the best-selling on 3DS. That success led to other media opportunities like an anime.
The first three mainline Yo-kai Watch games all sold at least two million copies in Japan. However, the series seemed to be declining a bit by that point, and by the time Level-5 released Yo-kai Watch 4, that one sold just under 300,000 copies in its year of release.
Yo-kai Watch 4 has never left Japan. It’s also the only mainline game on Switch.
Level-5 seems to have a lot on its plate. DecaPolice, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road, Megaton Musashi Wired, and Professor Layton and The New World of Steam are all on the way. It’s unclear when a new Yo-kai Watch game would ship.
In other Yo-kai Watch news, a special Japanese website has opened for the series’ 10th anniversary. You can find it here.
