Man who sent bomb and death threats to Nintendo sentenced to one year in prison

A decision has been reached in the case against a man who sent bomb and death threats to Nintendo, and a court ruled that he’ll serve a year in prison. Additionally, the sentence will come with a four-year suspension.

The man sent a total of 39 bomb and death threats to Nintendo. These threats led to the cancellation of Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo late last year, which you can read about here.

During the court proceedings, Nintendo provided a statement (via Oatmealdome). The company said that the threats terrified them and that it “reminded them of the Kyoto Animation attack”. Meanwhile, the judge said that the  motive was “selfish”, and that the crimes were “persistent and malicious”.

For those unaware, the Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 arson attack took place in 2019 and resulted in death and destruction. 36 people were killed while another 34 were injured. Kyoto Animation had received many death threats before the attack took place.

The man behind Nintendo’s threats was arrested in April. He previously made statements indicating that he was frustrated  while playing Splatoon 3 and losing. You can catch up on the details surrounding the arrest here.
