PlatinumGames gains ownership of The Wonderful 101 trademark
Based on a listing found on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, PlatinumGames now has full control over The Wonderful 101.
Nintendo was originally in charge of The Wonderful 101 when it released on Wii U many years ago. However, PlatinumGames handled the remastered launch in 2020. Also, the re-release was no longer Nintendo exclusive – it came to Switch and other platforms.
Even though PlatinumGames now owns The Wonderful 101 trademark, we may not see the company pursue anything further with the franchise. It was created by Hideki Kamiya, who left the studio last year. Kamiya did previously express interest in working on a sequel a few years ago in an interview with Nintendo Everything.
In that same interview, PlatinumGames’ Atsushi Inaba said that regarding The Wonderful 101: Remastered, the company needed to “consult with Nintendo first” before pursuing the re-release and Kickstarter. Inaba also said that “the kindness of Nintendo has made both the ports and this campaign possible.”
The Wonderful 101: Remastered is now available on Switch. You can find more coverage on the game here.
