Final Fantasy 6 HD-2D Remake

Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, has expressed strong interest in seeing Final Fantasy 6 get the same treatment.

Hayasaka was asked about which game he’d like to see receive the remake treatment in an interview with Inverse. As it turns out, Final Fantasy 6 is his top choice. Interestingly, that game was actually used as a reference point for the first Octopath Traveler.

Below are Hayasaka’s full comments on his interest in seeing Final Fantasy 6 HD-2D Remake:

“It’s not that we have concrete plans for this, but personally I would have to say Final Fantasy VI. Octopath Traveler – the first HD-2D title – was developed while referencing FFVI, as it had the highest quality pixel art. I would love to see how the game we referenced would look with the HD-2D art style.

Because this art style itself was created while referencing such titles, it’s highly compatible with games originally made using pixel art. This compatibility is probably why people feel this style is a match made in heaven with these types of remakes.”

Octopath Traveler was the first game to make use of HD-2D, but we’ve seen more Square Enix games embracing the style. Triangle Strategy and Live A Live are a couple of others, and we’re getting Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake next year.

Note that while the styles are similar, Star Ocean: The Second Story R is not HD-2D. This is actually a common misconception. We translated comments from the developer clarifying the graphical style here.

Thanks to Inverse for the news above. Let us know if that remake is something you’d be up for in the comments below.
