With Pokemon Day 2025 approaching, we’ve got some predictions for the big event.
Pokemon Day just around the corner, and every time February 27 comes around there’s always a Pokemon Presents to go with it. Last year’s presentation revealed the existence of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, details on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Raid events, and updates on The Pokemon Company’s other ongoing games. While the 2025 Pokemon Presents will probably be more of that (minus Scarlet and Violet, most likely), it’s a good time to toss out some predictions before the Pokemon hype cycle begins.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A news
This is definitely an obvious one and almost doesn’t feel like a prediction, but we’re absolutely getting our first real look at Pokemon Legends: Z-A on Pokemon Day 2025. The game was originally revealed exactly one year ago, but we only know that it exists – The Pokemon Company hasn’t provided any definitive updates nor a single screenshot of the game since. That’s probably a good thing, though, all things considered. While Scarlet and Violet have their merits, they were released in a poor state and it’s possible that Nintendo doesn’t want that happening again. One thing we’ll definitely see is a release date for the game, and probably just one or two new Pokemon. Going by previous Pokemon game reveals, it seems The Pokemon Company likes spreading out its new reveals over a few months and then leaving a couple of unannounced Pokemon for you to discover organically. It’ll also be interesting to see if Pokemon Legends: Z-A is indeed only on Nintendo Switch or if it will have a Nintendo Switch 2 version with enhanced performance. Given that the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation is still a few months away, though, it’s entirely possible that we won’t hear about Nintendo Switch 2 at all during the Pokemon Presents.
Other stuff
Historically, Pokemon Presents videos usually start out with a bunch of rapid-fire updates. There are often updates on Pokemon GO, Pokemon Masters EX, Pokemon Sleep, and Pokemon Cafe Remix. We’re sure that most viewers won’t be watching the Pokemon Presents for these live-service game updates, but they’re a core part of the presentations regardless. One thing that’s potentially interesting is that The Pokemon Company currently doesn’t have a brand-new game to announce. In 2022, we saw the announcement of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on Pokemon Day just a few weeks after the launch of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. In 2023, The Pokemon Company revealed DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. In 2024, they announced Pokemon Legends: Z-A. We’ll definitely be hearing more about that, as we mentioned earlier, but it does mean that 2025 could be the first year where The Pokemon Company doesn’t announce a brand-new title. Maybe.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Indigo Disk DLC had a ton of hints for the Unova region. The Terarium itself is in Unova, and there’s plenty of remixed music from Pokemon Black and White in the game. Recent leaks from Game Freak imply that the company may be retiring its normal remake schedule. Pokemon Legends: Arceus could have started out as a Diamond and Pearl remake, but it eventually became an all-new Sinnoh experience that served as something of a breath air for the franchise. We did get a traditional Sinnoh remake in the form of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but it was outsourced to ILCA rather than developed in-house. From that alone, it’s probably a safe (although not guaranteed) assumption that future 1-to-1 remakes of Pokemon games will be outsourced, if they happen at all. With that in mind, a faithful remake of Pokemon Black and White is technically possible as a late-life Switch game. There’s not really much evidence of this other than hints in The Indigo Disk, but it’s always a possibility no matter how unlikely.
One thing we probably won’t see is the return of Pokemon games on Virtual Console. As nice as this would be, The Pokemon Company has had plenty of opportunities to make older Pokemon games available on Nintendo Switch. Pokemon Day 2023 was a solid contender, considering the only main series content they announced that year was Scarlet and Violet DLC. This year, Pokemon has a new major title to show off, so it’s probably not a good idea for them to announce older Pokemon games on Nintendo Switch during the same year where they’re focusing on releasing a brand-new one. And as for the possibility of the 10th generation of Pokemon, the games are definitely in development – but it feels far too early to reveal those titles. That being said, it also felt like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were revealed too early, given it was only a few weeks after Legends Arceus released (which itself was only two months after BDSP launched).
It’s also possible that we’ll get news on merchandise, the anime, or possibly some new animated shorts. We fully expect the presentation to focus on Pokemon Legends: Z-A with no main series game announcements, but it’ll be interesting to see how these predictions age.
